Post by mark poulson » Fri Oct 19, 2018 7:49 am

Are there a swept handle and bent star drag available for the Chronarch MG 50 reels?

There is nothing we have in the current existing parts from other reels that will work. There could be some aftermarket parts but I am not sure.

PM DavidSA. I believe he added Metanium XG handles to his Ch 50mg’s. Ive installed on Cu 50e and 200e, Alde 50mg, Core 100 and haven’t had any issues with these swept handle swaps not clearing the drag star. Drag star barely touches handle, but not enough to scratch paint, and is still fully adjustable.

The handles will rub the drag star on the Core 100. I milled them down to clear the handle and retouched with a cold blue pen to turn them back again.

Thanks to both of you.

Interesting, been a while since owning that reel but don’t remember having a problem with it. I’ll take your word for it though. Nice mod, haven’t heard of anyone going that far with it. How about slightly bending the tips of the star?
Here’s one of my Alde’s with Stile handle and factory drag star. Works perfectly.

The star sits on a spring so it will flex out of the way I suppose, but it will make contact with the handle. Just like in your picture I can see it touching the handle. Over time it will wear shiny spots on the corners of the star and the bottom of the handle.

Bending may be an option but it depends on how close it is to the cast control knob. Some may hit, while others may not. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so when I did a couple of conversions I just milled the ends to make it fit correctly and not contact anything.

The drag star on the MG 50 is plastic, so it will break if I try to bend it. I had a tip break off of one before, so that's how I know.
I'm thinking sanding is the way to go.

Yes you can sand the CH50MG star is needed. You will need to repaint it or figure out a way to touch it up after you sand it.
