Curado 71hg gear swap?

Post by kevkim » Mon Aug 27, 2018 8:15 pm

First off, this is a wonderful forum! I've got a curado 71hg that I was hoping to swap in some micro module gears into and was wondering if there were any gear sets out there that were compatible?

I've read that the engetsu 101hg may be my best bet (with the addition of a drag clicker as well), but I have been unable to track down any sites that sell the gear sets.

I'm not sure if they will work in the Curado. To my knowledge there are no MM gear sets that will drop in.

Some where sold a set for the Curado 70 to be converted to a 5 gear, few had done it for a good compact cranking reel.

Teeth look small, but I don't think this is a micro module set...

Well now after reading, the Engetsu 100 does use micro module gears. I assume the Tackle Trap conversion uses this set... Not quite sure because there are a ton of different Engetsu models.

That 5 ratio gear set is from the Curado i. The i and the cu70 share the same gears.

K, thanks, the Engetsu reels threw me off. I guess they are the same frame, not sure about what else transfers. Again there are so many models it confuses me. Some Engetsu reels have the new white block SVS, others have VBS (Engetsu BB). Either way, I just assumed they interchanged between those reels...

I was able to finally source a set of Engetsu 101hg gears and confirmed that they fit, along with the drag clicker.

The following are the parts needed to swap into a Curado 71hg:

no36 washer
no37 washer
no38 pin
no39 spring
no40 spring holder
no124 drive gear
no127 pinion gear

Turning the handle is noticeably smoother and the clicking drag is an awesome feature to have in such a compact reel. I guess you could call it a Curado 71HG-K now :D

That is very impressive. Was it difficult to acquire the parts? Expensive?

That's interesting. Would love to see a "K" or "MGL" version of the Curado 70. A light spool, micro gears, extra drive shaft bearing, 90mm handle is asking a lot, but I would still buy that reel very quick.

It came out to $47 for all the parts, and $10 for insured shipping from Japan. I sourced the parts from japantackle.com by contacting Jun who was very helpful in test-fitting the parts in a scorpion 71hg prior to sending them over.

I recently acquired a Metanium MGL, and I must say that the extra drive shaft bearing makes a difference in having a smoother retrieve than the curado 71 with the MM gears. Although, I swapped in an aftermarket 100mm handle in the curado 71 and it feels very powerful for such a small reel.

Thanks I might do that to my scorpion 70, can you tell me the Engetsu main gear is aluminum or brass?

The Engetsu main gear is also brass. You'll need to be a bit more careful doing maintenance on the gears now that there's a small spring and spring holder for the clicker.
