Worm gear pawl question
Every shimano reel I've ever cleaned has the back side threaded. I'm just wondering what the point is, and what size or type screw/tool goes in there?
Re: Worm gear pawl question
I do not know the thread sizing. This goes back to older model reels where the threads were used to aid in installation of the pawl during assembly. I have an old side plate screw for one of our older baitcast reels that happens to fit those threads. I couldn't tell you which model because I found it years ago.

I think that little hole will help to reduce the weight a bit and improve the worm gear moving
Ben ...the shimano fan
Re: Worm gear pawl question
Weight will not affect the performance of the pawl. The weight reduction will be very small.

It is for pawl removal. The threading matches cover screws for that reel. Screw a cover screw into the pawl and pull it out.
