SC70 and CU70 breaking question

Weird question here.

I have a decent line of reels, all being Shimano. Core's, CH200, Met MGL's, CU50 and now two 70's.

On a decent day with no wind, everyone one of them I run with either 2 tabs on 2 off (met) or 3 on 3 off (rest). No issues at all. Decent distance on everyone. Some with upgrade parts are giving me insane smoothness and distance too.

That all went out the window with these 70's. I have the Scorpion 70XG and the Curado 70XG. Both are running stock bearings for now. My issue is controlling these reels. No way no how can I get away with 2 on 2 off or even 3 on 1 off. I have to run all 4 tabs on with the external dial to 2.5 or 4 with lots and lots of thumb.

I am by no means bitching, just curious as to why. Cast control knob is set to just stop side to side play as with every reel I own. I have used baits ranging from 3/8 oz to 1/2 oz jerkbaits with the same results.

My distance is suffering some due to running that much braking force. I know I can get more out of them, but that spool I wear is running Mach 4.

The spool is lighter in these reels and with the shallower design they get up to speed very quick. Casting them will require a learning curve.

The reels ship with all 4 brakes turned on to give the widest adjustment range with the dial. Once you get used to them you can fish them with 1-2 brakes on depending on your rod and casting style.

Interesting, no problem for me with 2-3 on depending on lure weight and dial on 5. I have Ch50 and Scorion 1000 xt as well.

If your spool is unbearably fast and it's overshooting the line travelling through the guides with lure on the cast - is that the case?

You could slow down the bearings with a heavier oil or grease oil mix to create some tension in there... I know I did just that with the AIR BFS bearings while I was casting my Calcutta 50's with 2+ gr lures and suffering a speedy spool also.

I have done that. The bearings in the SC70 are different than the CU70. Both were flushed, dried, blown and re-lubed. I put a total of 3 drops on either side and spun the bearing slowly to lubed it all. Using 40# PP on the SC and 30# J-Braid on the CU.

I'm going to drop some ZR's in them this weekend and give it another go around.

When I say distance is hindered, I don't mean that my a great deal. I can average 30 yards on a big cast, I'm just getting great with my 50's

I posted a chart from Shimano Japan somewhere where it shows that all brakes on and the dial on 1 on the new system equates to just under 2 brakes on with the previous svs infinity. I have the Curado 70, scorpion 70, casitas, engetsu, metanium MGL. I learned the hard way by just going out and fishing the new system like the old system and blew my casitas up over and over with only 2 brakes on. Once i studied the chart the blow ups went away. Only the Metanium can be run with 2 brakes on for me. I think it's the lighter spool. 3 on with the external dial between 2 and 4 is the lowest I've been able to go on the newer system with the exception of the metanium.

The spool in the Metanium is lighter than the other reels. If you use braided line with a leader it will drop the weight of the spool a little more. Braided line will be lighter than mono and FC with FC being the heaviest.

I'm running Braid in all 4 now. I tried 10# Fluoro on the SC70 and it was a disaster.

I have the Curado 70XG's and there was a learning curve. I use mine for plastics fishing with14lb flouro and have settled on two brakes on and the outside dial set on "3" on one reel and the other on"4". Great little reels, which cast effortlessly throwing Senkos.

Practically the same spool.

2 on and 2 off with external at 2 is what i use. cc set so bait stops on ground and then 1/2 a turn less.

I use my 70XGs for plastics spooled with InvizX 15lb flouro (.013" dia) and two brakes on with the outside dial on "2". I found the solution was all in the cast control cap with these settings and ended up tightening it down more than I thought was normal. It was all trial and error until I found the right pressure with the cast control cap. Now they pretty much fish themselves. Slick little reels. I found the 15lb InvizX to be the same diameter as the 14lb flouro I was using, so I switched.
