It is not just BPS putting them on sale for $139.99 but also Academy's down here in Texas

Academy's are plentiful in this area, and I would not be surprised if they sell more Curados than BPS so when Academy also does something like this also many, many Curados are going to be sold next few weeks

Note that the Citica is NOT on sale; the Citica has become the new bread and butter workhorse, best $120 reel anywhere anytime IMO

I'm certainly interested in the 50 sized Chronarch. Hoping it will be of similar quality, performance and pricing of the old Chronarch 50MG (Which IMO was one of Shimano's best efforts in a FW fishing reel).

I just finished upgrading to E7s! I really hope these new versions aren't too awesome, because I've got a feeling the E-series are going to come down A LOT in the "pre-owned" market if the new Curados are going to be less than $179.99 (as was mentioned earlier). That'll make it easier (read: cheaper) to continue building the arsenal of E-series.

Forget the chronarch.. way outa my price range even with a $50 price reduction (just guessing on that). I wanna see the curado... I'm anxious to see how it holds up against the Lews TP1. =P~

I hope at least the chronarch stays on par with the d7 and still remains made in japan.
Let me say first that I'm a Daiwa fan but I still follow closely Shimano and Abu developments and market moves.

I have to say that Shimano decisions in the last year have puzzled me a little bit.
First they go from the Curado B
Image
Good solid reel with SF spool technology.

To the Curado D
Image
An improve in quality (Aluminium handle side plate) and performance but the ergonomics were not the best specially the weight. The price was fair but the competition was very close specially the Abu's Revo.

Shimano realized that and followed the trend of smaller palming reels and cheaper price.
This lead to some cuts in construction quality like the absence of a aluminium handle side plate. Nevertheless this reels are still made in Japan.Image

Now Shimano wants to merge platforms and move the production line to Malaysia!!!
I don't like it and I'm on the Daiwa side. Can't image how Shimano die hard fans will feel ](*,)

For me, the Curado D was a huge mistake by Shimano, one they are still paying for.
The reel was better than the previous Curado but just to big and heavy. This lead to a quick turn back by Shimano leaving no time to retrieve the investment done in the development of the Curado D.
Shimano had to put still more money for the R&D of a new Curado E.
The result was a cut in construction quality.

And I believe this is the trend for the next years. Cheaper models to fill all the meddle market and kick out Abu's reel that seem to incarnate under several brands like Pflueger and Lew's and BPS.
As for high end reels, the market is smaller and Daiwa seems to have the advantage here with the Steez and the new Daiwa Z and T3 even against the Calais DC and other DC reels.

On the budget segment, Shimano has a strong word but competition is everywhere and the returns are probably not the best ones.

Just my opinion.

The D series was awesome just the 200 size was a huge mistake. Companies were going smaller and lighter and shimano did just the opposite. I love my 100D curados and the 100 citica models i owned still mad at myself for parting ways with a few 100D curados.

The B series was around for what seemed like forever and is still strong with many including myself owning 6 100B that are in excellent shape and get used all the time on the waater. The newer models have better drags but other than that nothing that has left me feeling the need to get rid or stop using those gems. Now though every few years shimano is changing the curado line. Innovation is great but i dont care for the constant changes. I hope they finally hit it out of the park and develop the flagship curado that they use to be known for.

The current E series is solid but the gap between the chronarch and the curado were just to much in my eyes. If the chronarch was priced in the 240-260 range msrp it would be different then add a 50 size at the 290 mark. Also the caenan which is a nice reel i feel is just not needed.

shimano moving production away from japan for many models [-X Like said before they may say quality has remained but history tends to show while problems may not be huge they definately develop and i dont want to be the guinea pig. If diawa can finally develop a solid high performance reel in the 180 -200 range i may finally look to jump ship

Lets see what iCast brings you these year but I wouldn't expect too much.
180-200$ reels is not Daiwa best offering. :-k

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I actually like the E version though, and will probably buy one or two more to have as basic workhorse reels (and to have the last Japanese manufactured Curado)...

I need another reel like I need a hole in the head but I almost went for a left-handed Scorpion DC. Then I decided to wait for i-cast to see if there is a left-handed reel that will interest me.

Really?

I'm with you, I think the reel in the pic is pretty ugly. Looks like the Caenan to me.
