AL vs Mg mfg costs

Post by zenbassr » Mon Jul 23, 2007 3:25 pm

do Mg models cost more than AL reels because Mg is more expensive as a raw material (or more expensive to process/treat)?

does the calais 200 Mg spool cost more than the AL spool equivalent?

thanks!

I'm not sure to be honest. I will need to ask Jeremy when he returns from field testing next week.

I know the treatment process adds to the cost of the Mg.

The Calais MG spool is around the same price or slightly less. I am having issues with my computer today so I can't check the exact pricing right now. I will update you later on here.

thanks for looking into that...

in the meantime i came across this SIC link for antares tune-up parts, which shows the Mg spool priced ~54% more than the AL version.

which is consistent in re: to the Mg treatment process adding to cost.

but then i compare prices of the Met Mg7 palming sideplate (Mg) vs. the 2005 Metanium XT palming sideplate (AL) and wonder why the XT part costs more? this is why i was a bit unsure if both sideplates of the Core/Mg7 were indeed Mg...

I assure you that the Core/MG palm side side plate is truly Mg. The plating process is more expensive than paint. This is probably why the Metanium is more.

The Calais MG-5 spool is much more than the 200A spool. $25 vs. $83

And not approved for use in salt water either. This is why we changed to the Lo-Mass aluminum spool for saltwater anglers.
