Shimano nomenclature

Post by REW » Mon Jul 23, 2007 11:22 am

This is a little off-topic, perhaps, but it has been bugging me.

Do you happen to know why Shimano decided to begin nearly everything in the US lineup with a "T," "C," or an "S"? I don't remember ever hearing why.

T is for Triton Trolling
S is for Spinning
C is for Casting

I do not remember when the change was made but the T has been around since the beginning. TLD is Triton Lever Drag for example.

I thought that it might be as such, but the "T" was throwing me off. I don't know why I didn't figure trolling would be it.

My research has shown this labeling system first appeared in 1991 with the introduction of the Chronarch, Curado, Citica, Coliolis, and Crestfire casting reels. I don't collect spinning reels and haven't checked on them. Shimano US also introduced their final spincast reel that year naming it the Chromica, a name later usurped by a casting reel.
