Life Expectation of any Shimano DC

Post by xxlbass » Thu Jun 28, 2007 9:05 pm

I'm an owner of a Calcutta 200DC and have had it since it first dropped I believe in 2004/5. I have had no problems at all with this reel and was interested to know what kind of life expectancy the DC components are capable of? and if it were to ever fail what kind of expense would this cost the consumer for repair?

Now excluding submerging and neglecting the reel what can we expect?

I am interested as well...I hope that maybe 5yrs is not out of reason?

BTW, I read somewhere that a DC chip replacement is rather pricey.

I'm sure it'll easily last 10 years if taken care of properly.
But I'm interested in what Bantam1 has to say.

One thing Shimanos never had a problem with is durability. Computers can easyly last 10 years if managed properly so why couldnt a chip in a Shimano reel? ;)

I love my DC100...also, I want to develope enough confidence to fish the reel in the rain like my other non-DC reels without fear of damaging the chip.

If the SB bite wasn't so great in the rain, it wouldn't even be a point of concern.

If it makes you feel any better I've used the DC in rain quite a few times and never had any problems.

Maybe you get a new operating system every five years.

We we have prototypes that are over the 5 year mark and they are still running. There isn't really too much that can fail in the DC unit. It uses an optical sensor which is found in several cars for ignition systems and they last well over 10 years easy. A hot engine is a killer of electronice so a reel seeing abient air temps should last a long time.

Has Shimano changed the warranty on the Calcutta DCs or is it still for one year only? Can you give us any insight as to why Shimano made this exception in their standard warranty because this unnerved many when the DCs were introduced...myself included. BTW, I bought one anyway and now that I have the DC250 handle with the big knobs installed, my Calcutta 100DC is one of my all time favorite reels. 8-)

I just took a look at the Shimano North America website and I must be losing my mind. The Shimano warranty on all reels is for a year only and
must be accompanied by a dated sales receipt, your name, address, telephone number (daytime), email address (optional), and a brief description of the issues related to your warranty request.

The following items will not be covered under warranty:

Non- ARB Ball Bearings, Roller Bearings.

It seems like I remember the Shimano warranty for reels to be longer than a year when I bought my first Calcutta DC200 because I was specifically cautioned about the one year warranty exception on the DC reels.

Our reels have always had a one year warranty. We are pretty lenient when it comes to our warranty. We have not charged for a DC unit to date. The Calais DC has a 2 year warranty.

Stainless bearings are not covered under warranty for corrosion. Of course if the bearings fails within the one year period for reasons other than corrosion then we will replace it under warranty.
