What line guides are high quality?
Are Aluminum Oxide guides good. These are on the St. Croix Premier rods. Will braided line cut these? How about Hardloy guides? I think those are on the Compre rods.

I run braid on my older premier rods and have had no problems... However, I find Alconite to be a good guide system and SiC guides to be a great product and would now never get anything under an Alconite guide set on my rods. Just my thoughts.

He beat me to it...
Stainless Steel (SS): 400
Chrome: 800-1000
Carbaloy: 1000
Aluminum Oxide: 1200-1400
Alconite : 1300-1500
NanoLite : 1800
Zirconia: 1000-1400
Zirconia PVD: 1600
SiC: 2200-2400
I don't put anything less than Alconites on ANY personal rod of mine.
SiC's are pretty standard for me. And TiSiC's are all I'll consider if sensitivity is an issue.
If Alconites weigh X...SiC's weigh 1/6 X...TiSiC's weigh 1/3 X. Yes...I've weighed them personally and found that to be exactly the case.
Will braided lines cut Aluminum Oxide? Not unless you've got a lot of sand that clings to your line.
First generation braids had Kevlar in their make up. Very abrasive. And this is where superlines got a bad name. Today's superlines are made of polyethelene, the same plastic as milk jugs. Its naturally waxy and creates its own lubricant. It takes a really poor guide to be damaged by superlines.
You can take a triangle file and saw away at an SiC guide and not even rub the gloss off it. Lesser guides will show wear more quickly in reverse order of the above hardness scale. But the Aluminum Oxide guide will still hold up reasonably well.

Lots of great info guys. But wow...am I not thinkin straight or are you saying that Ti-frame SiCs are twice as heavy as SS-frame SiCs Mattman? Always thought the TIs were lighter..

I didn't really say that very well...
If set of Alconites weigh X...
A set of stainless SiC's are 15% lighter than X.
A set of titanium framed SiC's are 30% lighter than X.
