Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
Cotter pin needs to be removed to change Magforce spring. I have managed to remove pin from Steez 103 spool and from Alphas 70 spool. But Ray’s spool and I’ze HLC spool have been impossible to remove pin with my tools and skills. What kind of tool you have used to remove pin?
I have used modified fork, knife and micro-screwdriver. Those which I have managed to remove was having slight aircap between pin and shaft. Those which I managed not to remove was without aircap.
In this video this guy removes pin really easily:

But I have tried for many hours to remove pin from I’ze or from Ray’s. Ray’s is not issue currently and I can train with it (I don’t use that spool). But I’ze need stronger spring and couple of other spools also.

Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
I use an eyebrows tweezer, so I can push and, at the same time, maintain contact with the clip when the shaft enlarges.

Thanks! Good advice! Have you used flat ones, like this:
Or sharp ones, like this:

The flat ones.
The pointed one bends when you push

Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
I have a very work set of small needle nose pliers that I use for this. The teeth from the tip of the jaws are worn smooth so they don't scratch the and if the spool shaft.
Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
Thanks for very usefull tips! I'ze spool cotter pin was easy to remove by pushing it with tweezers:
Only small issue is that cotter pin easily disappears, but not this time. And moreover to that I have purchased spare ones after I lost one. Which I found by vacuuming floor with Dyson and then finding metal particles from dust by supermagnet

Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
Put the whole assembly in a big, clear plastic bag when removing and installing those clips.
Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
Yes, sure. But that time when I lost it, it flew immediately to floor as it released..
Putting cotter pin back I have used this: Taping cotter pin to flat screwdriver by piece of duck tape. Duck tape creates a joint and pin can be pushed back to place.
And it was 'standard' Magforce Z spring in I'ze HLC spool. A slight different color than standard Magforce Z spring, but spring rate was similar than in standard Magforce Z is. I don't know was it original spring in this spool or has previous owner changed it. But now it's equipped with HLC spring and I hope it will be enjoyable to cast Seatrout lures. This I'ze HLC spool was early too close to Steez 103 r+ spool with HLC spring. (I have standard 103 r+ spool and another one with HLC spring.)

Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
I believe that is called a C-Clip or E-Clip. A cotter pin is actually a pin with a wire that wraps around and holds it in place once inserted. I think someone on here found pliers specially made for tiny e-clips, but I can't find the thread.
Re: Removing cotter pin to change Magforce spring
Thanks for correction! E- or C-clip sounds better. I just tried to imagine what it is and used dictionary...
I tried to find pliers that will do the work but not managed. K.T.F. had some tool for job, but I didn't find that either.
But luckily these very cheap tweezers did the work:
