Working on my Daiwa Pixy and Daiwa alphas air.

Post by Just_Bass » Fri Aug 02, 2019 5:43 pm

So I have decided to upgrade the felt drag on pixy to smooth drag(got a run from either big cat or big bass and stock drag is so jerky and cannot hold the fight) in the mean time changing line guide and change stock bearing to micro bearing from Alphas Air. On Alphas Air I will swap new gear (5.8 ratio) and upgrade bearing to HH air bfs bearing.
Ever since I got this pixy I only open in once to do some oiled and lubed. Today all the parts arrived so I started with pixy first. I open reel before but a lot with shimano reel, not so much on Daiwa. Man was I frustrated, you bet.
First off the flat head screw and all 3 different size, damn daiwa.
Second was spring for thumb bar release, it doesn’t wanna stay in place, damn daiwa. I don’t know if anyone have this problem but man oh man I wanna send this reel to professional now lol.

I have question though, the new gear set I got look the same as pixy but it came out off alphas ito. The pinion gear on my daiwa pixy is brass but the new set is aluminum, how so? Should I be concerned on aluminum pinion gear. If anyone have the same problem with thumb bar spring, what did you do to solve this?. What do you guys use on worm gear? I normally use grease but a lot use heavy gear oil. I only use gear oil on non disengaging level wind reels like abu 6500c3 and penn 965.

Damn I think this gonna be fast project, I’m still on pixy have not touch Alphas Air yet. I guess no fishing for me this evening.

I love taking apart my daiwas and cleaning/upgrading but that thumbar spring is the bane of my existence. It's always one tough cookie to get back in place, don't really have any tips on that. As far as the pinion, I believe it's not just straight aluminum but more of a mixture/stronger but I could be wrong. I do know that the same material is used in the TD fuego pinion and haven't had any problems/heard anyone complain. I used daiwa pin needle oiler on the worm gear.

That spring is easily located with a pair of fine tip bent nosed pilers.

Locate the small end into the clutch plate and hold the long end by a pair of above said pliers and insert into well lubed hole.

The pinion isn't aluminum at all, its marine-grade bronze phosphor, iirc.

Why does everyone want to change the line guide? Need to upgrade my pixy soon.

From poxy Pixy line guide to TDZ / Zillion look, you can increases line flow off a spool during a cast and look a tonne better while doing it.

A Pixy can't be a Pixzilla without a TDZ line guide. 8-)
