My ASC has a slight sound too. I find it is louder when the line guide is closer to the handle and fades when headed toward the sideplate.

When I put my thumb on the spool and turn the handle (stopping the spool), the above is still true.

Mine only does it if I reel while the lure is hooked to something. I just went ahead and ordered some 5.8 gears for it for Plat since I think they would be better suited for what I do with it anyway. If I clean up the gears and find that fixes the problem, great, I can always put those in one of the four other reels I have that can accept that gear set.

One other thing to check is the spool bearing pin. I didn't get one exactly perfect centered and it made a tick tick sound when retrieved.

Or even just the spool bearings. Easier to change them with a known good set and see what happens. Just had this issue with a NIB Lews Tournament MB, turned out to be a spool bearing.

I had a similar problem with my Alphas Air.
It's a 5.8 and it knocked about six times per each full handle revolution; something pinion or spool related.

I could both hear and feel the knocking and it increased substantially under load.
Tore the reel apart a few times but couldn't figure it out, it had just been fished a couple of hours.
I checked the bearings, no problems with any of them.

Today I tore it apart again and studied the pinion gear and spool shaft under a magnifying glass.
Turns out the spool pins end was burred and/or damaged and the pin seems to be slightly bent.
Installed a new spool pin, carefully centered, and the knocking has disappeared completely.
Sometimes the solution is both easy and inexpensive, but just sometimes...

I'm glad I went ahead and bought 5.8 gears even if that isn't the problem. I can always use a spare set of 7.2's, so I hope they're still good and all I need is a spool pin.

Nothing. I was hoping someone else might see something. It looks straight and centered to me. It also looks longer than normal, but I guess that's just the spool shaft?

The problems with the spool pin in my Air was not visible to the naked eye, well not from a distance more than a couple of inches at least.
I saw a slight burr on the end when under magnifying glass, the bend in the pin became obvious when I placed the pin on a flat surface.

I'll try to take a few pictures of my pin.

Well, the pin looks pretty normal in the pictures I took.

There's a flat spot near the end on the left hand side.
The right end shows minor damage.

I have about 20 years experience working with reels of all brands but I can't quite figure out what actually caused the one per pinion/spool turn-knocking.
All I know for certain right know is the new spool pin sorted the issue.
