I just asked 3 senior reel techs, namely the former owner of this shop of 31 years... and the new owner of this shop and another senior reel tech.

Owner: We do not use acetone. We do not allow it in the shop. And, it also collects in the liver and does not break down.

So their reason was for health and its harshness.

Former owner: Not on reels.

Senior tech: "Hell no!"

So I am not alone in avoiding it and it would be a great idea if the premier tackle forum also helped each other out to better products and processes for our rods and reels. Simple as that.

Acetone simply has no place in our business period. There are much safer chemicals out there to use.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but probably wont see reels from true "enthusiasts" on here. Thanks for coming to yet another forum to rant about your "warranty shop" and how much better they are than us "kitchen table repair guys". I hope they pay you for every post you make over here. You should try Bassresource, they are all just like you over there.

Mature open minded people here should be able to discuss rods and reels without getting negative, emotional, and personal.

Here is one that landed on my bench today- a Shimano Calcutta 200B... notice the ticket? Mailed in- just a bag full of pieces. Another kitchen table DIY at home fail "forum reel".

none! it already has a carbon drag washer(as has been mentioned already in this thread). one thing you can do to increase the strength of the drag, without sacrificing drag smoothness, is to soak the carbon washer in acetone for a while for clean out all the lube. let it dry, and re-install the washer dry...works GREAT!

in general, ceramic hybrids are louder......but they don't have to be much louder(unless you run them dry).......

with ALL ceramic hybrids, ordered dry or not, i always flush them in clean acetone, in an ultrasonic, till they are fast and quiet (after drying). typically, after a few flushes, they will quiet down a lot. sometimes, they come in quiet...though i still flush them so my customers get the quietest possible bearing(for a c/h bearing that is).

something else worth noting:
after a bearing has been flushed, ALWAYS, always, always, spin the bearing several times before lubricating them to get out any 'ticks'. if you do not, the 'tick' will stay after lubrication and possibly ruin the bearing. this is especially important when greasing frame bearings; you want them to run as close to absolutely silent as possible before greasing. otherwise, you will end up with a reel that no longer feels smooth.

i use acetone. the type you get in a hardware store, not nail polish remover!

edit: if you start with soap/degreaser solution(like simple green and water), that is ok....but i would definitely follow up with a solvent so that you remove all residue that can be left by soap and/or water

You need to take a chill pill and see if you can find a professional shop in your area where you can learn from the pro's and brands the real deal.
