rust removal

Post by lifeofRiley » Sat Dec 01, 2018 12:31 pm

I've been cleaning/repairing a batch of reels for a buddy. The reels seem to have more rust on average than what I've seen in my time at the bench. The worst spots seem to be the A/R roller clutches, the spool bearings, and often the bearing which sits on the bottom of the main shaft and nests into the frame. I'm wondering any tricks you have to get rid of the rust in the bearing cups which is often present.

Soak them in Coca Cola for a couple days, then rinse with isopropyl alcohol and allow to air-dry on a clean, lint-free cloth. That will remove all the rust, but any pitting will go back to rust eventually, no matter what you do. You can slow down the rust cycle where it is pitted with adequate lubrication, though.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Apple cider vinegar. Old redneck trick.

Or, you could just replace the bearings as they are cheap.
