What grease are you using for small spinning reels?

Post by ogrich31 » Thu Nov 15, 2018 4:14 am

Need a suggestion for new grease for 1000 sized spinning reels. Recently tried Shimano DG01/ACE-0 which is suppose to be Shimano's lightest grease, but I don't really care for it. It seems to get sticky very quickly. Any other thin or lighter grease suggestions?

Thanks!

Some, not all, but some reel manufacturers approve and even recommend this one:

Image

Super Lube® Grease is a patented synthetic NLGI grade 2 heavy-duty, multipurpose lubricant with PTFE. Synthetic base fluids and the addition of PTFE micro powders combine to form a premium lubricant that provides longer life protection against friction, wear, rust and corrosion. Machinery lasts longer, downtime is reduced, and productivity is increased. Super Lube® is compatible with most other lubricants and will not run, drip, evaporate or form gummy deposits, and will not melt or separate. 14.1 oz Can Super Lube® Synthetic Grease.

This all purpose synthetic grease won't dissolve some reel parts, safe on plastics, does not change viscosity with temperature.
Why is there a concerted effort of hate? And why is it allowed?

Whatever you do, try and get something that is synthetic. It wont break down and cause gumming of parts.

X2 on the Super Lube. You can get a 3 oz tube at Harbor Freight for $7.00 ... that tube will last you for years.

How thin is Super Lube when compared to Daiwa Space Age grease?

Asking because it's marketed as a heavy duty grease.

I've never handled the Daiwa grease so I couldn't tell you, but I'd rate the Super Lube about a medium as far as tackiness goes. What you need to consider when it comes to grease in reels is that a little goes a long way. Basically a micro coating on contact surfaces (gear teeth, sliding mechanisms, etc.) is all that's needed. Any excess is immediately squeezed out and pushed aside potentially causing sluggishness. It's easy to overdo it when it comes to lubing a reel, many people do it as if they were packing a wheel bearing. On delicate precision devices like reels it takes finesse to properly lubricate them.

In my experience, the relatively thinner nature of Super Lube makes for a fine reel lube as long as it's applied correctly. It's tacky enough to cling to the surfaces but not too heavy as to inhibit movement.
