Core 50 MG - Magnesium Corrosion

Post by Slazmo » Sun May 20, 2018 2:43 am

Purchased a decent exterior condition Core 50 MG - when received i did notice a bubble train of corrosion to the right of the clutch bar / back weep hole.
The corrosion has eaten through the frame a bit at that location - inside there is a fair dot inside of the gearbox cover (about the size of a US 1 cent piece) and some other lesser agressive area's where the stainless springs contact the EI treatment.

Also acorrosion issue exists where the clutch bar / plate inside pivots against the bushing ring and frame and the handle shaft lower bearing cup - fair amount of the frame there has been affected at that location.

Now for a new frame "bare" from Shimano Aus is $160... not going to happen.

So the question begs, what have been people's solutions to the corrosion they've had in any magnesium reel they've owned or bought into?? (Other than replacement??) What's the best treatment to remove and solution to treat (acid) and topical application to seal it to prevent spread / reactivation?

TIA

Good question and sadly I don't have an answer besides a new frame. I was a victim of that as well except the reel I bought was a Steez. I bought is 2nd hand but when I opened it up it had signs of corrosion. I asked Ian Shields about it and sent him some photos. He suspected some damage to some internal parts as well. I think I bought the reel for $200ish. The new frame, servicing, the reel, and possible replacement of other parts would have pushed $150. The reel also had a few small bubbles in the exterior of the frame which was my first clue that there may be some issues inside and sure enough that was the case. I talked to the seller and he kept telling me it was never used in salt or brackish water but I wasn't so sure. He refunded me the money and I sent him the reel back.

Have you asked the seller for a refund? That may be a good starting point. While discontinued the Core 50 mg is still not too hard to find in a above average condition.

Yeh the seller has used the reel in a salt environment extensively and our saltwater is proper salty - he said he looked after it but just not that near enough it seems. We've worked out a price and I'm happy with the end result. The Core line-up here in Aus was pretty thin and due to initial sales pricing it's quiet rare to even see one for sale even second hand - and i wanted the 50 regardless of condition to compliment my BNIB 100.

Sorry to hear of your issue. I've got a Core 100 & 50 that I use in both SW and FW. I don't have any issue with corrosion with either reels. I did open up the handle side plate to change out the stock drag washers before the reels were ever used and sprayed the frame with some T-9 Boeshield. Haven't had an issue, I do rense the reels after every trip to the SW and open up the palming side plate and remove the spool to allow the reel to dry. Once a year, unless the reel gets dunked in SW, I'll open up the handle side and do a cleaning and re-apply the T-9 to the frame (inside the handle cover). I use a q-tip to wick away any excess T-9 from the frame. Just need a thin coat.

Not sure what to do with your frame other than a replacement frame ](*,) . Sorry.

Try sending it to shimano service center for cleaning service, they might replace the body with a new one since Shimano advertised them as Saltwater safe.

I remember I had the same issue with CH100Mg, it's also Advertised by shimano as Saltwater safe. I sent it to our local Shimano service center here in Socal and to my surprise it came back with a new body free of charge.

Good luck!

Ive already spoken to Shimano Aus - tge body to replae is $180 & the gearbox "sideplate A" was $100 alone.

Corrosion isnt covered under my conversation with them - even when stating their saltwater safe reel classification.

Especially a second hand reel. Did some dry casting with the reel and its flawless in all function / use otherwise.
