Best screwdrivers for reel maintenance

Post by lifeofRiley » Thu Dec 08, 2016 8:58 am

This will be my 3rd year of repairing and maintaining fishing reels for myself and some buddies. I started with the screw driver from the ardent kit, and it's still the one I use the most. I also bought a set of finesse screw drivers from ace hardware, which I mainly only use as tools to leverage e clips off and once a blue moon on smaller Phillips head screws. I've done a lot of research on this site and others, and the most recommend are wiha, but there is also mention of a type of japanese standardized screwdrivers that people like as well. Any info would be appreciated because I'm ready to buy a set to hopefully last me the rest of my life. Thanks.

P.S. I work on any brand of reel but far and away shimano dominates my personal collection.

I was recommended a combination husky screw driver from home depot. It is a small jewelers style with the bits stored in the handle. The flats are hallow ground and the Philips are very nice. I take it in my box on trips away from the house and it was a good price. I also use this on guns and for clock work a quality tool

How in the world can they make a screwdriver set in Germany, package it, ship it, and sell it for $20?

Which set of Wiha's do you guys use?

My Craftsman precision screwdriver set was one of my best buys for reel maintenance, but after using them on other things, some have broken.

Wiha # 26199. 4 Phillips & 4 slotted will cover pretty much any reel screw you'll encounter. The price has gone up a bit since I got mine some years back, but they'e a good investment.
