My current favorite grease is the cheap auto parts store moly grease. It is petroleum based but it seems to stay in the gearing well and does a better job of smoothing out the gear mesh vs some of the non-moly lubes (synthetic included). I may step up and get a synthetic moly lube but right now i'm happy with my 4 dollar a pound stuff.

When i asked Sonoda about it, he said to me:
Hi Alex,
For oil, Shimano Bantam Oil is the regular product for the reel, and it is recommended.
For grease, I recommend DG-10 or 06. DG-10 is the most protective grease among Shimano greases, and I put it to most reels, but I put a little lighter 06 when I want to reduce dragging.
I listened to an experienced person and pleased with the choice.

I used to use SuperLube and now use Yamaha blue marine grease on the gears. It works very well as did SuperLube.

I use the Daiwa blue grease on all my reels. My Shimano reels have not mysteriously combusted as of yet

X2 on the Yamaha blue grease here. I use it on gears and all appropriate bearings. It slows things down a bit, but makes a real super smooth. I fish 95% salt water and have had absolutely no corrosion issues with very little maintenance after initially servicing.
