Steez 7.9 gears

Post by farmin542 » Sun Jun 28, 2015 1:50 pm

I ordered a set of these gears in hopes of converting a 6.3 Steez 103, it doesn't work as you may know from research or trying yourself. Since I now have this set of gears I was wondering if anyone knew what they would fit. I would love to have a 7.9 TDZ but if they won't fit the 6.3 Steez I feel pretty sure it won't work in the TDZ either. The only thing I can think of it may work in is a Zillion R since the IS79 is obviously closely related. I do have an IS79 and a Zillion R, and I plan to try the swap in the R tomorrow unless someone can chime in and tell me it doesn't work. If anyone knows I would love some info. Thanks.

They fit the Steez 100/103 SHA reels, as well as the IS71 and the IS73.

So it's just the HA's that those gears don't fit right...?

Correct, the HA has a smaller gear box than the SHA. So there is a greater center-to-center distance on the frame of the SHA for the larger O.D. of the SHA gear set.

And they won't fit in a Zillion either.

I have modified my Zillion with the Steez 7.1 gearset so I think the 7.9 isn't too big, because if Megabass installed 7.9 gears in thier reels so can we.

Depends if the gears are the same size to achieve the 7.9;1 ratio. MB could have gone with smaller overall diameter gears to achieve the same ratio, making the gears physically smaller.

It will be interesting if/when Ian chimes in here, him and I had a good discussion about the Steez gears, frame sizes, and applications.

Megabass often has gear sets custom-machined just for their reels. Unless I'm mistaken, Ian stated in another thread that the 7 something steez gears wouldn't work correctly in a Zillion, something about the length of the pinion gear iirc. Specifics of how you made the 7:1 Steez gear set fit into your Zillion would be much appreciated.

the SHA steez frames and the zillion frames have the same drive to pinion spacing. I believe the only prohibiting factor would be the o.d. of the pinion....and the only set i would really be uncertain about would be the 4.9:1 zillion set as it may require too much material be removed from the yoke to function properly

zillion gears will not fit into HA/HLA model steez reels.

from what i have seen, MOST gear sets used by Megabass are NOT exclusive to megabass; not outside of some different finishes they use(i.e. red anodizing on drive gears) and a slightly different height on the 6.8:1 gears used in the monoblocks(why they did this, i have no idea as it isn't necessary). the 6.8:1 IP set may be exclusive to MB, not sure...and the TD-ito 103hl also...can't think of many more, actually

Arent the Ito 103HL's gears just standard TD-Z 103hl 6.3:1 gears? I dropped a set from an Ito in a TD-Z 103ML and they work fine.

they fit, yes, but aren't the same ratio. the td-z 103ml is 5.7:1, the td-ito 103hl is 6.3:1

Correct, you just mentioned that the Ito gears may be Megabass exclusive like the IP68's above...

as far as i know, there are no other gears in that ratio made for lefty td-z's...so yeah, i'd say that is exclusive
