Stripping and polishing an old air metel Daiwa

Post by jtesch » Sun Feb 08, 2015 2:05 am

I came into an old JDM TD-X air metel reel that is perfect mechanically but the paint is awful. I was thinking about stripping the paint then polishing and buffing the bare metal and putting a clear coat on it. Anyone tried this? And any thoughts would be helpful.

The palm side plate is plastic so you will want to do something different with that part.

The primer on the magnesium is there for a reason-it keeps the metal from corroding. I think it is a vacuum-deposition coating, but may be acid-etched. Not sure, but either way, it is tough and protects the magnesium from pitting. If you do decide to go through with your plan, I can tell you for certain that you don't want to ignite any of your dust from sanding. Magnesium powder is highly flammable and will burn incredibly hot if hit with even a small spark. Just google "magnesium firestarter" and watch how readily it burns.

Magnesium is very reactive, hence the flammability, and it will also corrode rapidly. I don't think I'd strip it bare.

Found this on a Japanese auction site. Looks pretty sweet, but I don't think I would be brave enough to try it

Now I wish I could remember where I saw that thing...

I just remembered this post and saved the photos to my phone. If I recall it was under $100 bucks.
