Re: Grease or oil?
Use grease on the paw, and oil on the worm shaft grooves. Other than that, I think you've covered the majors.

Hi, what type of grease and oil do you'll use?
Has anyone tried car tranny fluid and
marine corrosion grease?

Re: Grease or oil?
There are several brands of grease/oil made specifically for reels that do a fine job without looking for some magic formula. I think regular cleaning and lubrication are more important than which one you use. Reel X and Hot Sauce work fine for me.

Re: Grease or oil?
I use the Quantum Hot Sauce grease and oil. The Rocket Fuel oils are very popular.
Re: Grease or oil?
Say, what's so special about Rocket fuel oils?
Is it really what they use in the aerospace industry?

Re: Grease or oil?
The Rocket oil comes from England and designed by Tony Gittins. Yes, oil used in aerospace. Tony was a champion baitcaster also and wanted a oil to improve his casting distance. The Rocket Fuel comes in three viscosities. Tournament , which is very thin and has to be re-applied quite frequently, next is the Yellow and used by most of us anglers and the thickest if the Red. Not much difference, but some use it to slow down reel. Regardless of oil you use, one drop per bearing....too much oil will slow the stainless steel balls or ceramic balls in the race way and bearing will become sluggish. Always clean bearings properly prior to applying oil.
Hope I've helped. conniek

Re: Grease or oil?
I heard some people use WD40 to wash their bearings.
And some use brake cleaner. Are those ok to use?
Also, what if the material of the bearing is different?
would different cleansers harm it more than clean it?

Re: Grease or oil?
in my shop, I never use harsh chemicals, only bio-degradable. WD 40 isn't good, but anglers use it anyway.. We had a local guide bring in a Chronarch that he could'nt get the left side plate flipper to turn side plate. He had used a brake cleaner on it and melted the plastic together. Chemicals will harm plastic parts. It may not appear so at time of use, but will melt or eat away at the plastic in time. To be on safe side, you might try very very hot water and Simple Green cleaner. We use a ultra sonic cleaner and it works great, however, a pan of water. cleaner, and tooth brush and a little elbow grease will work also. I've never seen any bearings that are made with anything other than stainless steel on the raceway. Now, the bearins may have stainless steel balls or ceramic balls. Using the bio-degradable cleaner ensures me that I won't harm any parts in reel. Better to be safe than have regrets later. conniek
