building the 5.1:1 'crankin'steez'

Post by e_bassfisher »

i have been asked a few times about this recently, so i thought i would re-post it.

people had been asking, here and there, about making a low geared steez.........since i knew the td-z 103 h gears fit right in, i figured i could, and would, make the gears from a td-z 103p work. i still fish with the first 'crankin'steez', and it is still my favorite crankin' reel! this only works with steez ha models; it WILL NOT work in the speed models...

you will need:
masking tape
tooth picks
300 grit paper
td-z 103p gear set
steez yoke

use the tool shown to open the pinion yoke i.d. to ~9.1mm

if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

have fun!

Thanks for posting this again e_! Dude, you are truly a Steez guru! I built 2 of these after you explained this mod to me. I also just referred anOther member (mike_honcho) to you as I knew you could go in depth better. Thanks again!

Cool. I had someone interested in trading me a cranking steez. I wasn't fully sure it was possible. Now I do!

Very nice! How about the STEEZ103HLA lefty? I only see td-z 103p, But no left hand reel to snag the gear set from. Pretty sure this would also work on the Advantage models HSTA and possibly the newer Tierra.

Clues on where to look on the lefty gearset?? :big grin:

hmmm. i really do not have a clue. to my knowledge, there was not a 103p released here or in Japan. i do not know of any other lefty reels that would work either....

The 103ML gear set would work, though it is 5.7:1, not 5:1. Still a slower, more powerful gear ratio, though.

I have 3 brand new steez and I want to change one of it to a cranking steez. Which one might be best suitable for this project?
And which gearset shoud I get?

one steez103sha (right, 7.1:1)
one steez100sha (right, 7.1:1)
one steez100hla (left, 6.3:1)

thanks.

This is the only one the swap would work on. The SHA reels have a larger diameter main gear than the TD-Z. :)

Thanks for posting this. I have wondered about dropping the gear ratio down in a steez and using it for cranking. I am not sure if I would rather go with a 5.7 or 5.1. The water is not that deep where I fish and I would also like to use this with square bills so the 5.7:1 may work better for me.

Ian, I may contact you about building one of these for me in the future. :-k

I can't get it either.
I am thinking to change my right hand Steez A 6.3:1 to a lower gear ratio
Hope E_Bassfisher will help :).
Will i be able to change the gear ratio, lets say if i have those complete set from TDZ 103?

Thanks in advance,
WW
