Best Lens Colour for Flats Fishing?

Post by JJH » Sat Mar 07, 2015 12:20 pm

Hi all, I'm going to be fishing Bonefish on the flats of Cuba in a few days and I want to know what your favourite sunglass lens colour is for flats/shallow saltwater conditions is? I currently own a pair of Oakly Black Iridium lenses (dark grey) and a pair of Oakley Bronze lenses (amber), both polarized of course. Your input is appreciated!

bronze amber for shallow water. It will help show dark shadows on that light sand. I used costa 580s in green mirror/copper lenses when I lived in Tampa.

I used my Costa 580 green mirror lenses in the Exhumas for bonefish and they worked excellently for me.

I fish a lot of shallow, crystal clear flats here in Florida and I love my polarized Oakleys. I am using the basic grey polarized now and they are great but i dont sightfish much with them, just helps see grass lines and holes. Now I am waiting for prescription Shallow Blue Polarized. Oakley recommends the Shallow Blue polarized for sight fishing in shallow water so I am anxious to try them. The grey pass 18% of light while the shallow blue pass 21% of light so they are a little brighter. Here's a few websites that may help with your decision if looking for Oakley lenses.

This site you can change the lens color and see what it looks like through the lens.

This is a prescription lens site, but it shows the amount of light that passes through each lens so you know how dark they are. These were helpful in narrowing the selection down to just a few options. Good luck!

Stick to copper lenses if you can find them, i've tried your standard colors and had the most success with that color.
