Sea trout baitcaster recommendations?
Re: Sea trout baitcaster recommendations?
I also recommend the Coastal Zillion. I have 2 and have caught reds up to 25 lbs and never felt like there was an issue at all. The largest thing I had hooked was a tarpon that i estimate wieghed 60ish lbs...I didnt bring it in because the line parted, but the reel was handling that fight like a champ also.

The Coastal Zillion is a bass reel. It's why it was designed with a drag of only 8.8#. I have used the reel for inshore fishing many times, still do, and have no issue at all with using it for that purpose. To each his own. But in my humble opinion, there are plenty of stronger reels much better suited for inshore fishing. The Calcutta TE 200GT is my preference.

The exsenve DC is now available LH but I figured you'd want a little more capacity.

Calcutta is an inshore beast. Can handle a bull red or cobia.

If you can't use a rightie, my suggestion is out: Calcutta DC250.

I don't get to fish the gulf nearly as much as I would like, but I agree any 200 size reel should be sufficient. You could be spooled by some of the bigger fish, but I will take that over trying to cast artificials with a bigger reel.

I'm going for two days out of Port O'Connor, TX end of the month. First time fishing the coast in two years. My usual setup is a 7' Medium power popping rod with a Curado 200 for live shrimp under a popping cork. For plastics w/molded jigheads a 6.5' MH XF and a Curado 200. Seem to have enough drag for most fish. If you hook a large drum, you may get spooled with any reels. I use 12 lb. line with FC leader for Specs and Reds. I'm sure my guide will have some additional setups for me. Good luck!

Take a look at the Daiwa Tatula....try the type R if you need the "shiny" bits. They alos have an HD version with extra line cap. I have one on order to test out. I think it will make a heck of a inshore reel. The specs match up well for it at a price point that is VERY reasonable.

Check out the Abu Garcia 4007lp if you can find one. They can be found under $100.

I use a curado 50e and 13 fishing concept with 10&15# braid,15-20# flouro leader wade fishing in south AL, no problems. Most of bigger trout,5#+, have come with 10#, but don't have any structure I'm having to deal with! and I can cast a spook a country mile!
