Trinidad 14a, 12a & 10a size difference

Postby bciya » Sun May 05, 2013 10:15 am

Hi everyone,

Just wondering what the physical size difference is between these reels. I'm looking for a small, palmable overhead jigging reel for my inshore jigging rod (Daiwa Blue Backer rod which is light and powerful). I was using my Black Sheep 300 but need a faster retrieve and a more powerful drag and gearing.

The Trrinidad 14a, 12a and 10a aren't available in Australia so I can't go to a shop and see them myself... but one shop actually did have a 14a (one off), is the 12a and 10a the same diameter/height and just narrower or are they even smaller in diameter? Or are they a taller/higher reel but narrower (which I've seen some reel companies do for jigging reels)?

I am also open to other suggestions for very small reels too, I am eyeing off the Saltiga LD 20 as well, but would prefer something a little smaller again, if such a reel exists.

Plutons, etc are out for me as they don't have the high speed retrieve I'm looking for. I was set on a Lexa 300 but just discovered the level wind disengages :( so that rules it out, I'm intersted in the Revo Toro 50 HS but the freespool issue has turned me off.

I don't mind if its a star or level drag, or if it has a level wind or not, just want a very small, fast, powerful reel... hence my interest in the Trinidad's :)

I'll be happy to go with a 14a but if the 12a or 10a is even smaller in height/diameter (more palmable) then I'd be happier with one of those.

Cheers

Have you considered the newer Avet "J" series of narrow reels? They are great! All reels carrying the "J" suffix are the narrow models, everything else about them is identical to the standard models in the series. I own the SX 5.3 MC and the SXJ 5.3 MC. Incredible reels, light weight and powerful; the narrow model doesn't require a clamp (works great on standard mag bass rods or swimbait rods which it was also designed for). Hope this helps.

I have both the 12a and 14a. For jigging, depending on how much line you need, the 12a is perfect. I use it for albacore and smaller sturgeons.

I just picked up an Ocea Jigger 1000 (sorry, don't know the equivalent trinidad size) and is that thing palmable. It smaller than my millionaire cv-203 and feels most similar to my 100 size Shimano Axis. I'm not fishing deep (about 50 meters max) and most of my catch will be rockfish.

If you enjoyed the Black Sheep, I suggest looking at it's new replacement the Shrapnel C3000H. The reel is gorgeous.

6.2-1 vs 5.1-1 retrieve & 10kg vs 7kg drag upgrade over Black Sheep

Daiwa now have 10 and 15 size saltigas and 100 and 200 catalina's which look to be downgraded ryoga's.
