Depends on where you're planning on fishing and the target fish for lure selection, if lures at all. In general up and down the coast surf fishing live bait is probably most popular. With the exception of certain fish and certain locations. That's for the locals to tell you, you get someone talking in a tackle shop or on the beach. There's a big difference between Mass and the Carolinas. Braid or mono, depends on your reel preference. Braid for a casting reel, good mono for spinning reel?

If there is one lure that will work anywhere it is the white buck tail jig, other than that the list is endless. My must haves are 5/8 oz Crocodile gold spoon, Yozuri Crystal Minnow, Zara Spook, and a MirrOlure mirrodine.

I fish these on 15lb braid and can catch just about every species.
