A new setup...

Post by wake » Tue Jul 03, 2007 2:07 pm

Hey guys!

This is my first post here... How are you all doing?

Well I have just gotten into saltwater fishing this year (I have been a long time freshwater fisherman)..

Anyway I just bought a new setup and would like to know what you think of it.

Reel:
Penn 650 SSm - spinning reel

Rod:
Ugly Stik Tiger BWS2201 - spinning rod

Line:
50lb Spiderwire Stealth Braid - green

I will be fishing Tampa Bay, the surrounding flats and occasionally some offshore fishing in the Gulf for many different species of fish.

Thought this would be a nice setup for a variety of fishing :)

(P.S. I am going to be fishing for Redfish this weekend and was wondering what you guys recommend for a leader? I would like to have a snap swivel on my Spiderwire so I can change leaders fast if need be.)

Thanks!

Fluorocarbon leader...30 lb is a good place to start...Throw that snap swivel away...Tie a 6 ft leader direct to main line, I like uni to uni, (strong, quick, and rarely fail, remember to double up your braid) but there are alot of knots out there. Have fun.

50# is overkill, unless you re targeting sharks.
30# with a good drag is more than sufficient.

It'll get the job done in a pinch and thats all that matters ... don't mind the gear snobs on this site they sometimes forget what they started with. .....

30lb florocarbon is good anything bigger and you'll need to take more care in you knots so they don't come undone. uni 2 uni knot
