was looking to pick-up an inexpensive combo.. will be used maybe once a month at most.. just for when i wanna run down to the beach with friends for the day.. not looking for brand recommendations, but rather basic info to build an all-purpose setup. will prob be using some type of pyramid weight and a leader and some squid i think... i dont do much salt fishing, will be trying to catch whatever i can off the jersey shore
info needed:
rod length/action
reel size
type of line and test # rating
tackle box basics (i.e. weight sizes/types, hook sizes/type)
and anything else you can think of..

Re: basic surf fishing setup?
at least 9 feet long rod. medium taper. capable of handling at least 2 oz of weight.
at least a 4000 series spinning reel with 200 yards of 15# test line mono
if you keep it away from the sand, then a casting reel is okay
2-8oz weights. everything else based on the type of fish, the type of environment, and ultimately the sand and saltwater corrosion.
plus a sand spike and plan to get wet

Average 10ft fast action M or MH rated for 2-8 sinkers
5000-6000 real 30# braid or mono ..
size 2 4 and 6 circle hooks will cover most applications from worms to chunking for bass and blues.
Jersey is known for big bass so don't go to light with your tackle.
3-6oz sinkers
I know you don't want brands but Tica surf rods are the best bang for the buck.

I would go get your self a Diawa Sealine rod in 9' or 10'. I believe they are really cheap aroung 59.00 or so. My brother in-law has one. It's a little bit better than my custom lamiglas surf rod and mine is IM7 blank. This rod can really allow you to cast very far. I would get your self any cheap abu garcia, shimano, or diawa reel be it bait or spinning reel. Just make sure you can have at least 150 yd capacity on 14lb line. Once your done fishing, I would wash of the rod and reel with fresh water.
