First of all, hello everyone. this is a great forum for the "equipment geek", as
I am.
My question is this. Is there a good way to estimate how much braided line a specific reel will hold? Logic tells me if 20lb braid has a 6lb diam and if a reel is rated to hold 100yds of 12lb mono then I can assume a capacity of 200yds of 20lb braid for that reel.
Will that work?

Re: estimating braid capacity
NOT quite. That would only technically be true if 12 lb had exactly double the diameter of 6 lb, which often is not the case. You need to compare the reel's capacity of the mono comparison of the braid. So a reel holding 200 yds of 6 lb would hold approximately 200 yds of the 20 lb braid.
Now for comparing breaking strain, the ratio between mono and braid becomes roughly 3:1, meaning that for a particular capacity of mono, the reel will hold approximately 3 times as much braid in the same breaking strain.

Re: estimating braid capacity
That makes perfect sense, Shortline.
I did my calculations using the spec. line diam. and and came up with 200yds of 12lb mono (Trilene) is equal, in bulk, to 289yds. of 20lb (Powerpro).
Thanks for the brain jolt.

Re: estimating braid capacity
Sounds about right. Glad to be of help.

You can also put 100 yrds of mono back on your reel its a good idea to use mono as backing anyway ,and even if u get a fish to spool ya with all braid something will give anyway
