Can someone explain why from the same kelp beds we catch both clearly brown colored lings and clearly blue colored Cabezon?? Indeed, they may both be lings but why are there clearly two distinct colors from the same feeding grounds??? Are these actually two varieties of Ling sharing the same habitat????

Does this fish have teeth ? If it does, its a ling.

Cabazon don't have teeth. They grind there food in there mouths. Cabazon favorite food is crustaseans. Sometimes when you cut them up and look inside there belly, you can find a crab or two. For there size, they are heavy (in weight). They have a rather large head compared to the body.

Lings have teeth. They are oppurtunist feeders. If you catch a rockcod and it dangles in front of them, they will jump onto and hold on to the rockcod. They have a long body. Look at the skin, it has a pattern to it.

In northern california, the cabazon and lings are closed for the season. Planned opening for them is suppose to be in JULY.
