Seas are calm. Skies are partly cloudy to sunny. Winds are light & variable.

We have a READER REPORT this week from amigo and East Cape resident

April 30, 2003

Out fishing again, this time with another of the Jones, Bill Jones from
Minden Nv. He had a great day with catches of yellowfin tuna and dorado to 35
lbs. We also caught a striped marlin on a cedar plug! Wow! Some of the other
lucky anglers caught wahoo today too. We have been seen wahoo on a daily
basis lately. The seas have been flat calm but the skies have been partly
cloudy. Water temp to 75 degrees with the air temp in the high 70's to low
80's. Just perfect! This next month should be wide open on the fishing so
better get on down here.

We have a FLEET REPORT this week from amigo John Ireland,

Weekly Fish Report for week ending: April 26, 2003

Very nice weather - cool mornings, warm midday highs about 80-85deg, water
from 73-75deg, with mild afternoon breezes. The hot bite resumed this week,
and combined with the great weather, made for an excellent week of fishing.
Billfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish, pargo, wahoo, cabrilla &
pompano all active. We even had a mystery fish:

Billfish - the consistent striped marlin bite continues, and an increasing
number of sailfish are providing a bit of variety. Fish are spread throughout
the bay, 5-7 miles out, with most fish taken on blind strikes on dark colored
lures, with some tailers taken on live bait.

Tuna - no large fish this week, but limits of school-sized fish (10-20lbs)
taking cedar plugs and live sardinas, about 10-15 miles off the lighthouse.

Dorado - big individual fish (to 50lbs) spread throughout the bay, taking
large marlin lures (all colors) and live mackerel.

Roosterfish - an extraordinary bite, with schools of big fish 30-70lbs of Las
Barracas, with slow-trolled live bait producing best.

Wahoo - some nice fish (50-70lbs) came in this week, from Cabo Pulmo to Los
Frailes, about 1-2 miles out, with rapalas and marauders working best.

Inside - pompano, pargo and cabrilla were all taken this week, on the reefs
from La Ribera to Cabo Pulmo, with live bait producing best.

Fisherman of the Week - Duncan Hadden of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, while fishing 3
days on a cruiser, took or released limits of roosterfish, dorado, pompano
and the mystery fish.

We have a FLEET REPORT this week from the East Cape Smokehouse, reporting for
the fleets at the hotels Palmas de Cortez, Playa del Sol, and Punta Colorada.
The smokehouse detailed the following conditions for the area:

WEEKLY REPORT 4/18 - 4/24:

Hola Compadres! The fishin is pretty nice down here in southern Baja amigos!
Weather wise, it's next to perfect with the daily air temp reaching highs of
80. This past week saw very little wind. We saw a slight rise in the water
temp with the range now being between 70-76 degrees. The colder water is
hanging close in to shore towards the north off the Punta Pescadero area.
Again, the warmer water is between Los Barriles and Cabo Pulmo to the south.
Regarding bait, we've got sardines, but no mackerel. We saw a real nice jump
both the Tuna and Dorado counts and the fish per charter and angler counts
remained consistent. What that means is that the concentration of fish
remained about the same, but there were just more hooks in the water, as
shown by the higher number of charters and anglers. All in all amigos, it's a
great time to be in southern Baja.

Regarding billfish, it's still somewhat slow, by East Cape standards at
least. The Stripers that were landed were mostly to the south off La Ribera
(5 miles), Punta Colorada (8 miles), Punta Arena (15-22 miles), and Las
Barracas (15 miles). Some success was reported off Los Barriles at about
24-26 miles). Additionally, there were a couple of Sailfish landings. In the
absence of mackerel, lures seemed to work best.

As mentioned the Dorado count picked up this past week after a slight drop
from the previous week. we're seeing some nice size as well with some
reaching the 40 lb. class. They're still hanging out to the south in the
warmer water. Anglers reported success off Punta Arena (10-16 miles), Los
Frailes (20-23 miles), Cabo Pulmo (20-22 miles) and El Faro (15-17 miles).
Sardines were the drug of choice this week as far as the Dodos were
concerned.
As you can see by the numbers, we saw a sweet jump in the Yellowfin count
this past week. They mostly in the football range but there are a few getting
into the larger pound classes. They're pretty much hanging out to the south
between Punta Colorada (18-20 miles), Punta Arena (16-18 miles), Los Frailes
(20-25 miles), and Las Tachuelas (22 miles). Limited success was reported to
the north off Punta Pescadero (14 miles). Sardines and cedar plugs worked
well.
Rounding out the Reel Scoop were 3 more Wahoo caught off Punta Arena (16
miles), 10 Roosters (Las Barracas), 3 Pargo, 2 Cabrilla, and 1 each for
Sierra and Pompano. There was also 1 Mako Shark landed.

That's it for another edition of Reel Scoop, where it ain't reported if it
ain't reported.

Tight LInes,
