Which types of hooks do you prefer J, circle, offset, kahle?
For some reason we're getting less hook up ratios using circle than the J hooks. We set the hook really hard, the rod tip goes back to like 5 degrees, 0 degrees being the backast, 180 degrees is where the bait n sinker is.
What type of hooks do you prefer and why, also do some of you prefer "red" hooks than traditional colors?

Ok, let me first say I'm no expert in this area, but here's what I know.
With circle hooks, don't you let the fish hook itself instead of setting
the hook? That's what I heard and read. Let the fish take the bait
and run, HOPING that it will hook itself as the comes around it's jaw.
I could be wrong.

Yep I just read that, and all those times we set it hard while using circle hooks. LOL

It's all a learning experience.
Next time I want to see your reports saying you landed
a fish on the circle hook, without a hard hookset.

i prefer circles while using live bait, or bunker chunks, i am yet to get a deeply hooked fish and no you do not set the hook, just reel up and aply steady pressure.

How about the rumors of red hooks getting more strikes? I may just paint some of my hooks red with nail polish just to see. If it is a marketing scheme, they're not getting a dime from me!!! .........j/k. LOL

Circle hooks are great for TUNA.
For the san francisco bay area, all other species you can forget about it.
Circle hooks- do not set the hook. Just leave it alone. The fish got to hook itself.
You might do this, leave your reel in free spool and put the clicker on. when the fish strikes he will take line. Let the fish run a bit, Then engage the spool. Your rod will load up and now you got the fish.

I like using red treble hooks, especially the Daiichi Bleeding Bait hooks, on my lures. I use circle hooks exclusively for bait fishing.

i use circle hooks for hooking live shrimp for snook and sheepshead. I use the owner brand for saltwater because I have found they are better than even gamakatsu and mustad for saltwater. On the other hand in freshwater i prefer gamakatsu and mustad.

I have been using Matzuo for quite some time now, I really like the performance. It doesn't cost a whole lot, super sharp, doesn't deteoriate. Until recently cabelas started carrying them, sweet. Now I don't have to look around in ebay searching for them.
After reading a few articles on the kahle style hooks,(*** I stay away from pro sites, or sites promoted by manufacturer, or biasted sites***) I find these hooks very interesting, and has been been giving people positive results. i'll give the kahle hooks a try. I'll limit the use of circle hooks unless I'm having a barbecue and just relaxing.

Sounds like the problem is "swinging" on whatever you're fishing for???
Try Hayabusa, Owner, or Gamahatsu circle hooks 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 for just
about anything..Albacore, Bluefin, Yellowfin, Yellowtail, White Seabass...
even on Ganions for Lings/Reds. LET the fish come tight on the hook and
DO NOT swing, jerk, go berserk, etc!!! Make sure you drag set correctly
and be ready for a hot burning ride and putting some fish on the deck!!
I caught over 200+ tuna and yellowtail last year and did not loose ONE
fish using 2/0-4/0 circle hooks!!
Also rather than wonder about gimmicks like Red Hooks, which I've seen
make little difference on many of the boats I fish on regularily...take more
time to hook your bait, be it squid or fin bait properly for best presentation
and use the right size slide sinker or no sinker and the right weight line..
and you'll deck more fish this year!!!...RON
