Pixy = Sol ? The Orange Saga Continues...

Post by mhood » Sat May 06, 2006 10:55 am

The resemblance is uncanny. The Sol is only slightly heavier and only slightly bigger but they are from the same bloodline for sure. Once I get a handle, cork knobs, ZPI bearings and the I'ZE Gold Spool on the Sol, it will definitely be one of my favorites. It casts and pitches like a dream right out of the box. See if you can tell them apart...

That is just 2 sweet.

Marc,

If I can get the kinks worked out of my spool proto type project I am working on, I will make you an orange spool for the Sol that is so light, you have to keep it tied down. Give me a few weeks before you buy one.

Long live the longhorn colors (give or take 10 or 20 shades of orange) =)))) =)))) =)))) =))))

Marc,

I bent my proto type spool this morning. (i got the fish in hand over hand-12 lb yozuri cuts). I made the walls too thin.

Back to the drawing board.

marc,
What rod is the Sol mounted on in the pics? ...just curious what it is and how it works for you. What presentations (lure weight, line, etc.) are you planning to use it for on that rod?

Go Illini--their color is orange (and blue)!

I've got it mounted on a GLoomis CR722 GLX (8-14, 1/4-5/8oz, Fast) that I had the DC100 on. I'm one of the strange ones that really likes a 6 foot rod (especially for topwater) and I really like fishing with lighter rigs. I'm going to string the Sol with 8# Yozuri Soft and toss 1/4 - 3/8 oz stuff, weightless Senkos and such.

If you use the Sol for stuff that light, what do you use the Pixy for?

Also, how do the reels compare to each other? Casting, smoothness, etc

Hey Bass Pro!

The Pixy outperforms the Sol with lures around 1/8-3/16oz. The Sol performs best with baits around 3/16oz. and above. The Pixy is the Champion of casting a 4" Senko and out performs the Sol, Alphas and Ito Ai in distance with less braking required. Both the Pixy and Sol are equally as smooth in my opinion. Hope the info. helps. ;)

mhood

Thanks for the side by side pictures, both are beautiful. I have been debating whether to get a Pixy or another Alphas ITO for smallmouth fishing in New river. Right now I use the ITO on a 7 foot custom rod. Seeing these two reels side by side they appear to be approximately the same physical size. I know the Pixy is lighter but they look almost like twins.

the pixy is a SWEET reel and one of my favorites. I have 2 ITOais and love them as well, but the pixy is a different beast.
