Fun Evenings Throwing Topwater

Post by Jeffbro999 » Sun Jul 12, 2020 5:57 pm

I know most people love to throw Topwater, so I wanted to share a couple fun trips that produced some great fish. Made it out for the last hour of daylight Thursday and Friday, and the Topwater bite was incredible on both trips. Landed a few good ones on Thursday, but missed some massive blowups, so I had to try it again on Friday...

I ended up having the best evening of Topwater fishing I’ve ever had, and didn’t miss any of those big blowups this time. Added another second or two to the delay before setting the hook, and it made a difference. Didn’t even have to move for the whole hour, and went somewhere around 18/18 and didn’t miss a bite. More importantly, didn’t lose any of the big ones while they went crazy rampaging through the shallows. Biggest fish of the day bit on the first cast, and it was on from there.

All fish were caught on a custom Conquest 842c/Stile SS with my repainted Sammy 115.

Wowza! What beautiful fish. Those must have been massive blowups. You have dream fishing spot right there and you know how to navigate it well. Those would be excellent memories to have to fall asleep to. Thanks for sharing.

Getting those bites on top really made it special. I rarely throw Topwater targeting big fish since I hate all the misses. Was determined though, and it worked better than I could imagine!

I was so pumped up from all of those bites, don’t think I’ll ever beat that second evening.

I don’t throw it often enough, but couldn’t agree more. Definitely gets the blood pumping!

Great fish! I fished a carp hatchery when I was about 14 in 1984 that also had bass in it. I went 31 straight with a Devil's Horse one evening before I caught all of the bass in that tiny lake. They were all stunted and only about 13 inches each. I have gone 31 for 32 casts with a Michael (Japanese topwater popper) in one of the golf course lakes behind the house before I caught all of those fish. Those fish averaged about three pounds. When the fish want topwater and they are competing, it is magical. I have a lot of topwaters from when I was a kid that have very little paint left on them. They still catch lots of fish. My FLW tour buddy was throwing the Roumba a few nights ago at the lake in back of the house and got all Quagmire giggity :laugh1: because he was on em.
