Deep Cranking/Big Bait Combos

Post by poisonokie » Sun Jan 20, 2019 7:38 am

Here's mine: Zillion 801MHRB-G/Ambassadeur 5501cs Pro Rocket with dual bearing skeletonized idler gear, dual bearing spool gear, and ceramic pawl. The Gantarel is as big as I go with it and it handles it well. Rocks for baits like the Duo G87 20a.

Fantastic setup. If only ABU could make that reel in a 2500 size.

Thanks. It's fun to use and not bad to look at.

I'd like to know more about those mentioned upgrades on that Abu reel...

Back in the day, my old 5501 cranked in a ton of fish. Your Abu looks like a Raptor compared to my old beater
Great looking combo!

Calcutta Conquest 300, 20lb Sniper, and a Orochi XX Leviathan. Does all my big bait work.

Roman Made Centurion Mind (TT won't let me post its name! but you can see it) paired with Daiwa Zillion HLC and Studio Composite handle.

That boobie is a beauty!
I've eyed that rod along with some others for some mod/heavy duty work.

Couple of questions...
-Any indication if it made in Japan?
-What is the realistic low end?

No indication of where it was made.
Haven’t been able to try it yet as we are still iced over up here. I bought it for swimbaits in the 2-3oz range which I’m thinking it will excel with. I have seen videos of people using it for the 8” RM Prologue worm and SK 8XD deep diver which runs at about 1.3oz.

I got it all from Mike's Reel Repair, a shop in Canada. You can also get a bearing supported drive shaft and dual bearing worm gear (the pro rocket only has one.) I'll probably go that route eventually. It's all custom made, so it can take a while to ship, but it's surprisingly affordable and the improvement to casting is palpable. I was able to turn off a couple of brake blocks immediately.
This is the way.

Couple of changes to my swimbait reel.
No more purple in the HLC.
Matches the Roman Made much better now since that’s what it’s all about right?!? :D

Looks great. How does the HLC handle big baits? I've an HLC spool in my IP68 and have done some yard fishing with it, 65# and a frog. The thing just insta-spools it is so fast. I swear I let my thumb off the spool and watch all the line disappear in like 2 seconds. Awesome spool.
