TopwaterCult

Post by Derek777 » Tue Sep 15, 2015 11:20 am

I've been looking for a few years for a jdm style topwater setup to throw all my crazy jdm topwater lures I've collected, and finally pulled the trigger on one. My first one is pretty understated, no crazy colored Toy Machine or Isuzu reel this time, but a pure classic Don Iovino tuned Abu Garcia 4600 paired with a Flyer's Surface Lady. It's a whole new experience fishing with this type of setup, old school and low tech but totally perfect for the technique, and it's added a whole other dimension of fun to fishing. Besides, who doesn't love topwater!

That is spectacular! That is a must have setup. I've also been eyeing and toying with getting just the right combo to do the same with. That combo matches perfectly.

5ft graphite construction made by Robelson, medium power, medium slow taper, lure weight 1/2 to 1oz
I'm very impressed. It's not a whippy rod in the least. Casts a 1oz lure just about as far as some of my high dollar long rod/reel setups.

Thats a sweet combo! I also like the shorter rods for topwater and im always curious why some people prefer long 7' plus rods for walking the dog. Where does one procure a don iovino tuned abu?

Thanks for the link to the Iovinos. How about some suggestions on where to get a rod like that? I don't even know where to begin. What are some names to search, specific websites, etc? Much appreciated!

A lot of the sights are strictly Japanese, but you can look at some of the rod/pistol grips price here. http://www.opa-fishon.com/
(I don't believe they supply outside of Japan)

This is an English blog about pistol grips and round reels for top water, which you can use to learn about this style of fishing.
