Wicked Sol/Alphas/Zonda Mod...

Post by bronzefly » Mon Aug 06, 2012 8:13 pm

If anyone else has successfully done this mod, please stand up

We're working to bring the coolest mods, the best parts, and the most unique stuff to the forefront here on Tackle Tour at The Tackle Trap. Today, we have successfully machined a stock RH Daiwa Sol so that it will accept a carbontex drag stack, PX Type R 80mm Carbon Fiber Handle w/Cork Knob, a PX-R cast control cap and swept drag star, and most importantly it's a CLICKING drag star with this mod!!! The same can be said for any RH or LH Sol, Alphas, or Zonda... the trouble in paradise is the availablity of all these critical parts at once. We're doing our best to keep them in stock, but they are only available in extremely limited quantities - see the website for more details. Enjoy the photo of this wicked, wicked Sol!!

Oh - a clicking drag star...how much metal did you have to remove to get the clicker?

pretty neat. I would like to see the red parts be silver or orange to match but the handle, knobs and drag star look sweet.

Used to be the collar on the clicking drag star would interfere with full crank down on the Sol/Alphas/Pixy reels. Have not experimented with the PX- R-Type star and clicker to see if they would swap out or not. Cannot tell by any pictures if the collar on the PX R is shallower than say a Zillion or TD-Z drag star.

One guy did cut down a Steez star collar right a the ports and then installed the clicker. It worked fine.

Interested to hear what Gary came up with.

You need a few parts to make this work.
Check out the mod kit,

Thanks Craig -

That's the kit for the Pixy/PXR platform... the same parts apply, but we have to actually mod a part so it'll work on the Sol/Alphas frame. We'll market the Sol/Alphas kit and have it on the website very soon. We're trying to get a few more of the kits in stock, but some of the pieces, all of which are necessary, are on backorder except for what we have in stock and on the way...

The R star interferes with a standard cast control knob. i.e. I can't use a non R cast control knob on my R. I believe the R star is interchangeable with a Steez star. You can see that the collar on the R star has a larger gap around the boss that houses the AR bearing than a normal alphas/pixy star. This collar is what hits the CC knob and this is why the R CC knob has the outside edge carved off.

So if you swap in an R CC knob, you can use an R (or Steez??) star and gain clicking. But, short of paint or anodizing, you're stuck with red.

This is just one of the 3 Sols Brian upgraded for me. They had put in PX 68 R grears in them earlier is why we used the red accent instead of gold. These have had the drag and bearing upgraded also. Didn't upgrade the spools because I don't cast anything lighter than 1/4 oz. A year ago they were stock and now their awlsome. Thank you Tackle Trap.

I received a Pixy kit from The Tackle Trap, simple mod that works flawlessly. =D> =D> =D> It's such a sweet mod that I just put in an order for the Sol mod. Thanks again The Tackle Trap. :big grin:

when I placed the order, the kit wasn't available yet

when I got the shaft, there was a little nub on the bottom, but no worries, I dremeled that nub off and all was good

on a side note, the new shaft is about 0.36oz lighter than the SOL original shaft (0.19 vs 0.55)

We did but sold out of them. We're hoping to get the remaining part to make both RH and LH kits to work, but it's on backorder for some time we're told. We have plenty of RH driveshafts in stock though!
