So is there a "right" way to hold those things?
I think I would be confused on what to do if i ever caught one of those, lol.

I always open up the reels and grease the inside walls and gears inside except for the spool bearings the very first thing before using it the first time. A good wash after using it in saltwater goes a long way.
Yes, hold it on the tail and don't get you finger close to their mouth they have those tiny sharp teeth with very strong locking jaw. Always use a pliers when taking out lures especially the one near their mouth.
