36.02 lb Limit from Lake Austin

Post by airfob » Sun Jun 26, 2011 1:39 pm

Fished an overnight tournament this Friday and the big girls were on the chew. My partner and I won the tournament with 36.02 lbs and won Big Bass with a 10.29 lb fish.

Out of 15 teams we had 10 limits over 20 lbs with the top four breaking the 25 lb mark. Here are second through fourth places:

2nd place - 27.60 lbs

Image

3rd place - 27.56 lbs

Image

4th place - 25.49 lbs

Been fishing with Steez reels since they first came out and I really never understood why some bass anglers think a Steez has a light drag at 8 lbs. I caught all of my fish on a Steez with a stock drag (set at about 75-80%) and never had a problem. In fact the 6 lber on the far right pulled more drag than the 7 or 10 did, thought it might have been a big hybrid or small striper at first. I've taken them down to Falcon as well and have never had a problem for fish up to 8 lbs...now maybe a DD down there might test the drag a bit but not many people are going to run into that problem on a daily basis.

Great fish. Have those fish spawned? If so, which I assume, what the heck are they eating to be so fat bellied.

SICK! Smoked em very well done. I agree with you on the drag. 10lbs is plenty.
What baits and rod's were you using?

Awesome job and sweet fish!

The big girl was full of eggs and had not spawned yet. You can still find water temps in the lake around the high 60s to low 70s; fish will spawn starting in Feb all the way through July. The lake is a 1600 acre constant level lake that is fed and connected to a larger 18,000 acre Lake Travis. Colder water is released from the bottom of Travis and flows through Austin and eventually downstream to the rice farmers. A lot of anglers believe some fish may even spawn twice a year due to the longer season.

As far as forage, Austin also has an excellent population of bream and it's not uncommon to catch panfish over a pound. The lake is also filled with good numbers of large crawfish.

Lake Austin really is a special body of water...it's lined with multi-million dollar homes, situated in the middle of town and is littered with beautiful women on the back of ski boats...the bass population isn't half bad either! Best part about it is I live just 2.5 miles away from the closest ramp on the lake.

All fish were caught on Grande Bass RattleSnakes and Power Tackle rods.

Wow. that is a fantastic bag. I really feel for the guys in 2nd place though. You know all night they figured with almost 28lbs that they had that tournament won.
