Just like to share some pictures of fishing in Malaysia. Unlike temperate countries, we do not have any largemouth or smallmouth, etc. here. the next best thing is the peacock bass, which according to some who have fished for largemouths, fight better. according to them, they rate the figthing order as follows, peacock bass> smallmouth> largemouth

Actually, fishing conditions is currently not optimum, at the place where those pictures were taken. Water level is extremely low and the PB's are not as active. That's why we decided to troll and got all those so called "bycatch"

The place where i fished is on the state of Perak, among the many hundreds (possibly over a thousand) ex-tin mining lakes.

Thanks for the complements guys ! Just to add in some additional info about fishing for the giant snakehead. Usually, this particular fish are caught in snag infested waters. the usual tackle setup for monsters like these are 50lb braided line, coupled with Shimano Calcutta 200 size baitcasters (and Calais). the rod used are about 10-20lb or could be even heavier. The first (initial) run of this fish is magnificant, for biggies of about 10lb and above, virtually no ammount of drag from a stock standard freshwater fishing reel can stop it! it's torpedo shape body makes you feel like you're hooked onto an underwater homing missle heading for snags. for my case, i was fortunate to land the fish in a virtually snagless environment using my untralight tackle setup, which would be suicidal if used to tackle them in heavily snagged areas .

For anyone who are interested in fishing in Malaysia in the near future, this is the one species which you can never miss!

Peacock bass the next best thing to Large mouth ?? I think it may be the other way around ! lol ! I wish there was somewhere in the US were you could catch PB like that !! How bought you come to Texas and Ill put you on some LB, then Ill come to Malaysia and you can put me on some PB !?! Awesome fish, congrats.

That's actually not bad an idea. I've always wanted to sample some largemouths (LM's) myself. Especially, in Texas where i heard that the LM's are huge compared to the north. About PB's, it's an introduced species in Malaysian waters. apparently, there's only the Butterfly Pavon in Malaysian waters. I heard that the butterfly pavon in some lakes in Malaysia actually outgrow those in native S.America. I've personally seen pictures of PB's in Malaysia weighing about 12lbs caught by just casting from the bank . My personal best is 4lb and boy, they are one hell of a fighter. I wish we have LM's introduced in Malaysia.

way cool. i thought the peacock bass was just in s.america(and dade co. FL. by transplant). the snakehead looks, and i bet is, the same fish as the USA bowfin/grindle(we call them mud fish in FL). good fighter,but the bass guys hate em. one guy's trash fish is another guy's trophy quest. i happen to think that the triggerfish and the shepshead are top notch quarry. any info on whether or not my ideas re species are correct?

In fact, there are PB's in resevoirs in Singapore long ago then. PB's are introduced here whether intentionally or un-intentionally remains a question. at lease there's good fishing here with PB's. The giant snakehead is a tropical/sub-tropical fish. We do not hate this fish here in Malaysia. it's good fun once in a while after fishing for bass. the fight is really good with un-stoppable runs. I'm not too sure about the triggerfish and the shepshead, as i've never heard of them before in Malaysia. but the snakehead sure is a better fighter than the pike
