DAIWA 18 ZILLION TW HLC 1516 SH

Post by Bass Shores 52 » Wed Jun 19, 2019 5:35 pm

Anyone have any experience with the Daiwa 18 Zillion TW HLC 1516 SH? Considering it for a deep diving crankbait and A-rig reel for a G-Rods Pro Bass 7-11 Heavy Magnum Crankbait stick.

No reason it wouldn't be perfect for that. You might consider getting a set of 6.3 or even 5.5 gears for it, though.
This is the way.

I have one. It's a great reel for far casting heavier stuff at least 3/4 oz total weight and up. Drive gear is alloy, very smooth and well made. Not a versatile spool but does what it's intended for very well.

I plan on using it for SK 6XDs up to 10XDs (1 ounce to 2 ounces) and for A-rigs, so it shouldn't see anything under 3/4 oz. I love the looks of the reel, long carbon handle, and knobs, plus it would look great on the G-Rods black and silver accented rod. I'm just wondering if functionally I might be better off with a Zillion SV TW with a ZPI PG spool for around the same money and have a reel that would be more versatile. As poisonokie stated previously, I'd probably need to order a lower ratio gear set for the 1516 SH while I could get the Zillion SV TW with stock 6.3:1 gears. I know, get both right!

The thing is the line you'd use for A Rigs probably won't be the same as what you'd use for deep cranks. So maybe get a spare 1516 type spool for the heavier A Rig line and spool the HLC with 12# Fluoro or 30# braid it whatever you want to use for the deep divers. Of course if you do that, the 1516 spool won't have the HLC characteristics, so yeah, just get both reels.

As an alternative, you might want to think about the Zillion 1520 HD Crazy Cranker (I would suggest the 6.3, but the CC is on sale, (by a site sponser none the less)) The 1520 G1 is a fantastic spool.
Although the 1516 HLC offers you the spool (you think you want) and the sweet carbon handle. The HD offers the Magseal, and all CRRB bearings (which even in freshwater will outlast the non CRRB). It also offers a stronger drag, and most importantly more silver to highlight your G rod. I also thing the extra 15 grams will balance out that 5.9oz rod better.
I love me some HLC spool. But,I'm not really sure how you will like an HLC spool for either of those applications. The HLC thrives with 1/2+ aerodynamic lures. If it's a wind catcher, it doesnt matter if you are throwing 1 or 2 oz. The lure pretty much needs to sustain momentum from the time it goes, until the time it lands. No lobs, no floaters.
If you feel compelled to complete the package pick up a 1514 or 1516 HLC alternate spool and a Studio Composite RC-SC 92/27 handle (with the silver accents of course).

X2 on Zillion HD 1520, a 6.3 would do the job. And should you feel the need for HLC, just get a 1514 or 1516 HLC spool for it.

Wow, thanks for the detailed response and insight. That's exactly why I love this forum! I was afraid of how "Wild" the 1516 HLC spool may be after reading Jun's comments on the reel from the JapanTackle website.

Aquaftm45, have you thrown the Zillion 1520 HD? I like the looks of the reel and line capacity but am uncertain about the fixed inductor spool. They pop up for some really good prices from time to time making them tempting.

My Daiwa Battler came with a Magforce Z 1520 spool, The HD according to Daiwa AU also has Magforce Z on it's 1520 Spool.(inductor pops out).
https://daiwafishing.com.au/collections ... zillion-hd

The Zillion HD on Daiwa JP and Japan Tackle advertise a Magforce fixed inductor spool. The Zillion HD link on Daiwa US does not work

The Ryoga 1520 is advertised with a Z spool

The aftermarket 1520 on HH is a Magforce spool....

Hmm..me confused ] :?

Heck..All I can attest to, is that the Magforce Z 1520 is a very capable casting and pitching spool.

Thanks. I'll have to pick one up with a spool upgrade in mind the next time the price it too good to pass up.

Inductor pops out of the HLC 1520 and Ryoga 1520, not the HD. Haven’t tested the 1514.

Are those 1520 Aliexpress spools? They don't appear to be Ray's studio.

You know the USDM TWS spool only holds 10% less line, and they're really nice long cast spools, so that's always a good option for a higher capacity over the 1516.
This is the way.

Yes, dunno who makes them. They are in “obetter” or “0better” tatula sv tw aftermarket spool boxes. Build finish and smoothness when installed is very nice. Only “issue” has been the sv unit where they have either stamped too much og a hole (see between 12 and 01 on the gold spool) or too little as on the black spool where I had to remove some of the metal (it was stamped out but still clung to the sv unit, easy)
