Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
Hi all
Recently I received a used TD-Z ito 103m from Japan. Reel is beautiful, however I took it out for a cast test tonight and found a problem. Initially the reel was only achieving 20ft distance using a lipless crankbait, and I tried all the brake and spool settings but nothing could get me more distance. Eventually, I turned the cast dial to 10 and the bait launched out like it should be.
But then after a few long casts the reel started it's uselessly short casts again, so I turned the brakes down to 0. This worked from few long casts and then yet again the reel started the short casts again.
So could anyone enlighten me as to why I'm getting these huge inconsistencies in casting distance despite my brake settings? Is it a problem with the reel or the spool?
Thanks, Tim

Could be a spool bearing, brake rotor, brake magnets, dirty.....

Check that the grey magnet has not come loose from the housing.
The magnets are probably working loose and aligning to max brake.
scroll about 80% down the page 'Fixing in the Left Side Plate'

The indents in the grey magnets should align (from memory) when the dial is set to max.
If it aligns at any dial setting other than max, one/both of the magnets is probably loose.

This along with checking the bearings to see if they are shot like mentioned above as well as check the inductor to make sure it can move freely.y2k88 wrote:Check that the grey magnet has not come loose from the housing.

Loose side plate magnets on old reels is a very common thing. It'd be first thing i would check
Re: Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
I would also check and see if you're willing to do it take apart the cast control sometimes if it's not set properly after doing maintenance or a takedown or part swap it can be placed on the wrong setting when put back together.
Re: Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
Pardon, I should have stated magnetic adjustment dial.
Re: Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
Thanks all, I believe it is the magnets as they are lining up on settings other than max.
So how can I fix these magnets, I believe they're loose? I've never had to do this before and can't find much info online.
Thanks, Tim

UDPATE:
There's a video in Japanese

You'll know which ring is loose because the notch in the magnet ring won't line up with the notch in the housing.
When you're ready to reassemble, it'll probably take a bit of trial and error to reseat the outer magnet housing back into the slot in the side plate/overall housing, such that when the dial is set at max, the magnet notches line up. Tip is to set the mag dial to max first.
Or.. just order a new part if said part is still available.
Or maybe send it to Gene Ward/Geneo Kustoms.

Re: Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
You can use super glue to fix it. I’ve had to do it to a couple of my Tdz’s. It’s a pretty common issue honestly.
Re: Daiwa TD-Z ITO problems!
Super glued up that loose magnet, let's see how it goes when I try it out next week. Thanks all for the help and hopefully this is the end of my problems
