At least the internals don't look too bad. Better than gen3 revos even

For any of you who may be curious, I was sent a brand new in the box Alcance NS to be repaired. Out of the box the worm gear was not turning. Upon opening the reel, it was found that the idler gear was completely left out of the reel. Further more, IMO this is nothing special, other than the spool. It shares many features with many Banax built reels. The spool is certainly ZPI built, but sadly does not even include ZPI bearings. I mean for the love of all things holy, it even has Hot Sauce for lube.

Is it possible the owner of this BNIB reel applied the Hot Sauce to the internals in an attempt to figure out what the problem was? ZPI carries their own grease designed for baitcasters, why would they use Hot Sauce? ZPI grease would cost them next to nothing and Hot Sauce isn't cheap.

I believe the zpi that you're thinking about has essentially disappeared completely. No more grease bearings or parts by the sounds of it. I doubt zpi does anything now but send boxes of spools to the oem reel supplier. ZPI probably never even touches the alcance line at all. Hot sauce would be dirt cheap if you have an oem contract with banax.

I was basing my question/statement re: Hot Sauce on personal experience. Someone sent a reel to me to check before sending it out to a JDM vendor. I removed the side plate and inside was slathered with Hot Sauce. So much, in fact, the worm gear wouldn't turn.
Granted, this is going back to 2004/2005 but it's not out of the realm of possibilities.

It was 100% unmolested prior to disassembly. Customer removed the reel from packaging, noticed the Levelwind not moving, and contacted me immediately. I do most, if not all, of his reel work. I assume they don’t use their grease due to cost, much like they didn’t even use their bearings in the reel. This is, with the exception of the spool, and maybe drag star, a rebranded reel.

Here you go $100 on Aliexppress for the same reel. Spool even looks to be the same.

It's not a Doyo or other Korean OEM reel. It's even worse in that it is some Chinesisum thing from Aliexpress.

After closer inspection the ZPI one does have a different spool. This reel is most likely the same platform from the same Chinese OEM but made to look like the ZPI reel. The spool in this one is deeper and most likely heavier That said I would rather have a ZPI like Chinese spool in a Daiwa or Abu than a ZPI spool in a Chinese reel.

From what I’ve seen on the various social media websites of ZPI principals, they are trying (my personal conclusion) build the company quickly. 13 Fishing, 6th Sense, and Favorite Fishing type growth. If I’m not mistaken, ZPI has introduced a 3rd model of reels for saltwater and heavier applications, I can’t be sure though. Again, my view, it’s probably easier to start with a base model and expand than to start with a single, premium product and work down.
The “All In” strategy is high risk but that’s the name of the game. One of the founders of ZPI was involved in motorcycle racing, not an interest for shrinking violets. My experience with the ZPI products has been all positive BUT I’m not ready to pony up for any of the reels or rods. Yet.

Wish they would’ve stuck to spools

I messaged the seller online out of curiosity and he claims the spool on the Chinese reel is the same spool from the Alcance, and that everything is the same. He even claimed they came from the exact same factory. The spool does look different on the photos though.
