Shimano Scorpion 70 XG

Post by rockchalk06 » Tue Jan 17, 2017 9:41 pm

Picked this up from JLS last week. I'm going to make it my Jerkbait/Topwater reel. Its stuck on a 6'10" MF for now. I've got some parts on the way from Hedgehog and will eventually have a custom rod built around this reel.

I've never owned a reel that had a spool that moved this fast. Generally I can put two tabs on and be fine. I've had to put all 4 on and move the external dial to 2.5 to tame this sucker. 1/4 Jig (no trailer) will flat out sail with this bugger.

I was like you and tried to fish the new brakes like the old ones. Big mistake lol.. I posted up shimanos chart on the new brake curve vs the previous. 4 tabs on is roughly equal to 2 brakes on the old svs infinity system. The Metanium MGL is the only spool of the newer brakes that I can run with only 2 brakes on.

Same here. I have two MGL's and I can generally run 2 on 2 off with 1-2 on the dial.

I fish my curado 70hg on the 6'10" MF omen black 2 too. The first thing I did with my curado 70 was degrease and oil the spool bearings. I was surprised how fast the spool was. I run all 4 brake tabs on with the dial set to 2-4 depending on lure weight and wind. I use it for jerkbaits, topwaters - whopper plopper 90 and spook jr, squarebills down river in current, and light t-rigs.

If just can't believe they grease the spool bearings from factory... what were they thinking?

It's been explained several times already. Usually JDM reels don't come greased up from all the ones I've gotten. USDM is a different story.

How does the 70 size compare to a regular curado I? Can you put some in hand pictures up? I want a super small reel for palming when I'm fishing topwater but it's hard to find any kind of definitive exterior measurements on reels.

It's a little smaller than the curado. But its more comfortable for me because the rear palming plate is tapered in vs the curado 200. It's probably one of the 3 smallest reels out right now.

What would the other two be?

Thanks for the info.
