Shimano Scorpion?

Post by Gorris317 » Fri Sep 16, 2016 6:42 am

I'm looking to add another baitcaster to my arsenal and was thinking about getting the Shimano Scorpion. Don't really know anything about it but it seems likes its comparable to the Chronarch? Is it a reel worth purchasing or would I be better of buying the Chronarch or another Curado? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks for reading.

If you would like a red and black Curado then the Scorpion would be for you.

So I should probably just save the extra money an buy a curado.

I believe the Scorpion and Curado are cut from the same cloth, Scorp doesn't have the anti-reverse paw like the Curado. Thus making just a touch lighter and a tiny bit smoother. Scorpion is a very nice reel.

I have one and always thought it compared favorably with the Core. When fishing both reels (Scorp and Core MG) on nearly identical rods at the same time (switching off for comparison purposes), I have to look down to see which reel I was actually using.

I am a fan of the Scorpion.

Well said. I would also add that the bearing quality in the scorpion is higher than that which used in the Cuardo/Chronarch E. I also dig the maroon/black/red colors in the reel. I have 2 of the Scorpion 1000xt reels, 1 Core 50mg7, 1 Curado 50e, 1 Alde 50mg, and 1 Chronarch 50e. Just a rock solid platform. ;)

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm really digging the color scheme. Looks like I might have to pull the trigger and get one.

I have had the xt1000, and have 2 of the 70s. The xt is a phenomenal reel in every way. The new 70s have to be the best looking scorpion to date. The finish is outstanding, with a red fleck in black paint. Only thing I would have done different is the same idea but with different colors. The black and red is getting old. To be fair I havent casted the 70s yet but I have read alot of positive feedback. The Scorp is around 200 shipped ems and the curado can be had really really cheap on the bay so I guess its what its worth to you. For me its the scorp over the curado all day every day

To be clear there is more than one reel called Shimano Scorpion. This is a bit of an over simplification but, Scorpion = JDM Curado.

Awesome reel. I use one 1500XT at my cottage for fishing pike. You can even fit anti reverse pawl if you want to, i did, but i didn't like the extra noise is did to reel (maybe more grease to part would have fix the problem). There are some discussion about the bigger backplay on Scorpion (compared to curado), but i don't really see it as a weakness, since most of the time i reel forward . I really want 1000XT and fit Avail spool on it for some light lures.

I had to add some extra gold on it

That reel looks so sexy! I was doing some research last night and found a dealer who has the 2011 Scorpion DC for about $250, which might be an option.

That is basically what I thought it was but I have no experience with JDM reels.

Thats a nice looking reel as well. I seen a few of those listed on ebay. Might also be an option.

The curado was my first "good" baitcaster. Started out using baitcasters in April with a Promax combo and then upgraded a week later to the curado now. I absolutely love the reel and will be getting more of them.

The main reason for the Scorpion was I wanted something a little different that no one around my area would have and would feel a little more refined. I honestly didn't even know the reel existed till about 2 days ago when I seen a youtuber fishing with one.
