Has anyone been able to translate the instructions on the yellow card?
Re: 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL picture
I can't translate the japanese but I'm pretty sure the yellow card indicates to the user to oil the brake drum periodically, like every 5 outings or something along that line. Failure to oil the brake drum results in increased noise after several uses.

By the way, Met 13 vs Met DC vs Met MGL battle for distance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY1ldRTKd6Y
Re: 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL picture
Thanks for this, I've been thinking about purchasing either a MET MGL or DC. Guess I'm still leaning more towards the DCLoafer wrote:By the way, Met 13 vs Met DC vs Met MGL battle for distance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY1ldRTKd6Y

Re: 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL picture
Im subbed to that guys channel, he does a head on MGL vs 13 in another video. It looks like with some lures he is getting a little more distance with the MGL. It may be a moot point since it seems the 13 is out of production?Cyacnba wrote:Thanks for this, I've been thinking about purchasing either a MET MGL or DC. Surprised about the swimbait casting distance, but shows MGL generally has an advantage over the 13 met.
Neko-rigged OSP Drive Crawler 5.5"
21.8 21.3 MGL (+11%)
19.6 19.1 13 (baseline)
18.6 18.5 DC (-4%)
Luckycraft RTO 0.7 (1/4 oz) crankbait
28.7 27.9 MGL (+16%)
23.6 25.3 13
29.8 28.5 DC (+19%)
Megabass 6" Magdraft swimbait (1-1/4 oz)
25.3 27.7 MGL (-12%)
31.1 29.1 13
32.9 34.9 DC (+13%)
Deps D-zone spinnerbait (1/2 oz)
33.2 33.6 MGL (+9%)
29.8 31.4 13
(major backlash) DC

Thanks! What's strange though is the card on 13 Met and Curados has a picture of the brake whereas the MGL has a picture of the spooljpmoney wrote:I can't translate the japanese but I'm pretty sure the yellow card indicates to the user to oil the brake drum periodically, like every 5 outings or something along that line. I have been able to test the reel on a couple of short outings and in my hands, for those who were wondering, i feel it is an improvement over the 13 Met. It actually feels smoother and more powerful on the retrieve and casts effortlessly. It is a blast to fish with and I highly recommend it. Now if i can only catch a fish with it
Re: 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL picture
I drunk impulse bought a Met MGL HG from Japan last week while scrolling through TT threads and just had a chance to pick it up at the post office this morning after missing the delivery on Saturday. Got to fish it for an hour or so today and it is quite nice. The rest of my reels have either VBS or DC braking systems, and so far, I prefer this reel's braking system to the VBS. It feels like the external dial helps a ton in eventually finding a nearly thumb free+max casting distance sweet spot. Definitely looking forward to being out on the water when the wind picks up or when it starts to get dark to see if the external adjustment comes in handy in those situations as well.
The only other magnesium reel I've owned was a Core 50MG7 and it felt tiny, hollow and crappy. It fished great, it just didn't feel right and it wasn't the reel for me. So far, the Met MGL feels and looks like a winner, and as long as it doesn't melt in saltwater, I'm sure I'll continue enjoying it.

Re: 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL picture
the MGL is spectacular!! silky smooth feel, very capable spool( i cast some really light stuff with it while testing one), and very much less finicky brake system than the '13 met.
Re: 2016 Shimano Metanium MGL picture
Actually the yellow card that comes in the Box talks about not tying your line through the center of the spool because of the spring on the bearing on the inside. The translation was terrible but I got the jist of it. I also think the new brake system doesn't require the same maint. as the old sv system
