Daiwa Alphas Finesse Custom or Megabass Zonda68

Post by Isaiah20 » Fri Oct 24, 2014 3:36 am

I am recently new to the whole BFS thing tried it at one point a few years ago didn't really understand it and never got a rod and reel worth anything. Discouraged I delved into the fly rod scene for a while. I love fly fishing, but I also love any light tackle fishing. Anyways I am wondering what you guys think of buying a Daiwa Alphas Finesse Custom and tuning it, or just buying the already tuned Megabass Zonda68? Either way one is going on a Majorcraft Volkey 652. I was thinking of going the Brenious route but decided I should give another company a shot. I already own a tuned Shimano Chronarch 50e which rides on a G Loomis CR-842-2, and a Abu Garcia Revo LT which I did not like for finesse even after being tuned. That reel rides on a St. Croix Mojo Bass Topwater rod, I use for twitch baits pike fishing. The new rod and reel will be used to throw jigs, tubes, and split shot rigs for smallmouth bass. Another option would be after it is tuned to put it on the G Loomis and use it for fishing spinners and jerkbaits in the trout stream. The Chronarch would be perfectly capable of throw the above mentioned rigs on the Volkey.

Help Please!

Well both reels as stock, I'd go with the alphas as it has a more shallow spool setup for bfs.

Ultimately, the Zonda with a mb finesse spool would be the way to go :big grin:

If you look in the right places, you can find a Finesse Custom for just over $200 right now. Zonda will run you another $100 +. You could spend the extra money on a hard-core finesse spool or pixy spool and some spacers and have a reel that would outperform the Zonda for around the same money.

Or a Presso spool (which is in stock at Ichiban Tackle).

Or I'd get E_bassfisher to make me one of these.

I think he redefined Finesse...and Custom along with it.

That's a pretty sweet alphas super finesse. All it needs is some bass or die knobs.

I prefer what's on there now. If I decide tho change the knobs, the red and silver Livre knobs would be my choice.

Red and silver Livre knobs would look fantastic on that reel. May have to get the brake dial screw and level wind cap, they look very good on your reel.

Couldn't be. The SS is built on the Steez frame. This spool fits only the Alphas/Sol/Zonda frame.
