Z2020HL and Ryoga 2020L for swimbaits

Post by SWH » Sun Aug 10, 2014 9:27 pm

Hi

Anyone fished 5 ounce swimbaits with both reels for a long enough period to pick a clear favorite? You don't get much resistance form an 8" hudd, so maybe the comfort of a Z and the slightly higher IPT is a benefit.

Unless you love round reels or need absolute durability, the Z is a bit better in pretty much every way.

I use a Pluton 200HSL (with 5.1:1 gears) and a Z2020HL. I prefer the Pluton with lower gears for higher resistance baits and the Z for lower resistance/topwaters. I find the Pluton to be easier while fishing Hudds

Do you consider a Hudd a resistance bait?

I find it easier to reel a Hudd with my Pluton as opposed to the Z2020. Could be that the lower ratio offers slightly more torque. The Z2020 is doable with the Hudd, but much preferred with the Pluton.
And to answer your question, I find the Hudd to be a resistance bait due to it's non-streamlined shape

Ive fished Hudds on both. Found the Z more versatile - and balanced on my rod better - more comfortable in the hand. I tend to go really slow on my retrieves anyway - so I didnt notice a resistance difference (at least at my slow retrieve rate).

I have the same reels and with the Hudd 8 it's too much for the Z. Pluton 5:1 is perfect. That big tail does put out a lot of resistence even on the 6" which I prefer on my Ryoga 1016L 5.3 gears.

The Z is an amazing reel but it would be better suited for true size swimbaits had they made it slightly larger to fit the bigger 5:1 gears.
