Another ARMS question

Post by Dragboatdriver » Fri Mar 28, 2014 10:59 pm

I am going to bite the bullet on an ARMS Challenge World Edition. However, here is my dilemma. It is very clear to me that the rod best suited to my fishing style is the Fine Bronx. To push me even more so toward the Fine Bronx, the reel it will be paired with will be an IS 73 Voila with a Honeycomb spool and Hedgehog Air BFS bearings. So what is the dilemma you may ask?

When I purchase a top shelf piece of equipment I like to look at it on multiple levels beyond its intended usage. In this case, I am concerned with the resale ability of the Fine Bronx because it is not as desirable of length/taper/power. Granted, I have no intention of selling the rod once I get it, I still want it to hold as much value as possible. The Diablo is another that I am semi-interested in, but it would not see much use in my current lineup. However, it would likely hold its value better due to being a more desirable length/taper/power.

I have consulted Gary (Bronzefly) several times and he assured me that in terms of usage in my lineup, the Fine Bronx would be the one to go for.

So in short, what would you guys do? Go for the one you want to use and forfeit some resale value? Or, get the rod you will not use as much in hopes that it will be more desirable down the road. I want to be clear that I am not buying the rod simply as an investment and have no intentions of ever selling it. However, resale value is something that I like to take in to account when making a purchase like this.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

For this to even be a debate makes me think your priorities in life are all screwed up. You might want to go contemplate why an arms rod or owning any nice fishing equipment is important to you. You should obviously get the one that works best for what you need it for. I can't even imagine someone would post a disagreement to that. If you're buying 1000 dollar fishing equipment you can't really be worried about getting a return on your investment, since the law of diminishing returns is obviously in play when you start spending that much. I'm building a 4'6" ultralight casting rod for fishing trout and panfish in small creeks with a T3 air. I know that a lot of people would consider it a useless rod to have. It's what I felt like would work for me though.

If it is something you want and will use, get it and forget resale. Diablo has wider appeal IMO, but the Bronx is exactly what you need.

David,

Simple solution, get both

The Fine Bronx suits your finesse oriented style without a doubt. The ARMS Challenge World Edition Diablo is a masterpiece as well. Decisions decisions...

I view the ARMS as a work of art as much as a fishing rod. It's something I hope to pass along to my family some day and not something I consider for resale. I think once you get one, it won't leave your collection. I do agree though, the Diablo would be an easier re-sale than the Fine Bronx, but this should be of minuscule concern in this decision!

From my perspective, even if you were going to sell the ARMS rod, you are going to take a hit on price no matter what. There are not many of us that are willing or able to drop $1k on rod. Get the one you want and that is going to fulfill your fishing needs. I learned a long time ago that there are very very few tackle items that will hold their full value.

I got a IS73 Viola sitting here waiting on my Arms World Edition, so I like your taste lol... I chose the Super Diablo, I go with the rod I want and don't factor anything else in.

X2......Some used ARMS Complete rods go as low as 40,000ish yen on Japanese auction and second hand sites, half of the original value. I don't think rods hold their value as good as reels. I'd just get the one I'd use.

Not useless at all! I've got a 5'7 casting rod built from a 2-6 MF blank just for BFS purposes too!

If you are more concerned with getting a return on your investment than in owning a precision piece of equipment don't even consider buying a Megabass rod. Save your money and buy a $200 rod.
