outdated legendary tackle

Post by kgasuns » Mon Dec 30, 2013 1:27 am

As I have joined the enthusiast community just a couple of years ago, I have been doing a lot of reading to catch up.
And often you read reviews of 5 or more years ago and wonder, if that tackle is still as good compared to later products.

So what are some famous - once probably even legendary - tackle, that have been outdated by some enthusiast offerings in their specific segment?
Just your biased feelings and experiences. :)

Interesting thread. Would love to hear others' thoughts as well.

On this site, I guess the most legendary reels, that you would keep seeing they got mentioned all the times, are Pixy, TD-ito and Conquest 50.

Not to get stuck on the word "legendary" (not excluding it as well) probably let us concentrate on tackle that has been much recommended for specific uses. Let us say, become "standard" for some techniques within the enthusiast range.

Plenty of the 'older classics' still retain their positions in the tackle hierarchy today(using reels as an example).Maybe not in their original form, but rather in an updated form.Daiwa has been introducing 'upgraded' versions for years. This process usually involves the introduction of a new spool/swept carbon handle/different gear ratios/added bearings/etc.
Enthusiasts also modify their 'older classics' to try and keep up with current trends.

This has resulted in a magnitude of modern day Pixy/millionaire/TD-Z/ examples on the forum.
The 1016 T3 spool and the recently introduced SV spool will ensure this trend continues.
The one single factor that will age a legend is the 'weight factor'
The once brilliant TDX fell from grace due to this. Will the Zillion follow.... :-k

It would probably be a good idea to add the reason, why it is outdated. And what tackle has replaced it.

Has anybody got any ideas of some legendary/"standard" rods, that just got replaced by better ones for their specific use?

The daiwa td hi reels can compete with new reels imo(especially if tuned). The td2hi is a tank of a low profile swimbait reel.
Feels tougher than my Z200 & I much prefer it for heavier stuff. To me... It's one of the top 3 reels daiwa ever made.

Well, tuning in way means admitting, that the real/rod - as taken out of box - is outdated/does not match some required specification.

On the other hand. The point made about more solid old reel, could also be a part of a trend. New reels with their increasingly non-metal parts could indeed be less enduring.

Shimano Metanium 100mg (Chronarch 100A platform) is still a top performing reel in my rotation. :D

Well, sure any of this tackle would still be performing nicely - after all, that is why it got popular in the first place.

But over the last years there is just so much new tackle, that is eventually outperforming the old one. And sometimes in revolutionary new ways, that we could not have dreamt of before.

In a way, we can call this thread "Kill your romantic feelings towards ..."
